Case study research: opening up research opportunities

Abstract: Purpose -The case study approach has been widely used in management studies and the social sciences more generally. However, there are still doubts about when and how case studies should be used. This paper aims to discuss this approach, its various uses and applications, in light of epistemological principles, as well as the criteria for rigor and validity.Design/methodology/approach -This paper discusses the various concepts of case and case studies in the methods literature and addresses the different uses … Show more

“…A multi-case study was conducted. This strategy is useful to comprehend the theoretical phenomena studied in a holistic way, enabling crossing information and evidence among cases (Takahashi and Araujo, 2019; Yin, 2015) for greater robustness in theory development (Eisenhardt and Graebner, 2007). Thus, the multi-case study enabled the understanding, detailing and description of the characteristics (Yin, 2016) inherently to the formation of social enterprises through creation and discovery theories and, more precisely, the interconnection between these theories for the emergence of a mixed theoretical approach.…”

“…This article presents a checklist comprised of four phases: foundation phase, prefield phase, field phase, and reporting phase. Takahashi and Araujo (2019) The case study approach has been widely used in management studies and the social sciences more generally. This paper aims to discuss opening up research opportunities in case study research, its various applications, as well as the criteria for rigour and validity.…”

“…In accordance with the nature of the research questions, exploratory research supported by an analysis from multiple case studies was used to gain a broad view of DMAIC implementation. Multiple case studies enable the researcher to seek for patterns of similarity and difference that spread across cases, as the same issues are explored in every case (Takahashi and Araujo, 2019). Case studies also help to generalize, as the results of the findings using various cases can facilitate some form of replication (Noor, 2008).…”

“…Case studies also help to generalize, as the results of the findings using various cases can facilitate some form of replication (Noor, 2008). Besides, conducting other case studies can also diminish the errors and bias of a study through case study procedures and a case database development (Yin andMa, 2015 in Takahashi andAraujo, 2019).…”
