ObjectivesExact symmetry and perfect balance between opposite jaw halves, as well as between antagonistic teeth, is not frequently observed in natural masticatory systems. Research results show that asymmetry in our body, skull, and jaws is often related to genetic, epigenetic, environmental and individual ontogenetic factors. Our study aims to provide evidence for a significant link between masticatory asymmetry and occlusal contact between antagonist teeth by testing the hypothesis that tooth inclination is one of the mechanisms driving distribution of wear in masticatory phases in addition to dietary and cultural habits.Materials and MethodsThe present work investigates the relationship between dental macrowear patterns and tooth inclinations on a sample of complete maxillary and mandibular 3D models of dental arches from 19 young and adult Yuendumu Aboriginal individuals. The analysis was carried out on first molars (M1) from all quadrants. Occlusal Fingerprint Analysis was used for the quantification of macrowear patterns, and 2D cross‐sectional geometric analysis was carried out to investigate asymmetry in dental arches.ResultsThe asymmetry is highly variable on both arches, and it is associated with differences in the inclination of upper M1 crowns. Each molar has variable inclination (buccal/lingual) which influence tooth to tooth contact, producing greater or lesser variation in wear pattern. Interindividual variability of morphological variation of the occlusal relationship has to be considered in macrowear analysis.DiscussionOur results suggest that overall asymmetry in the masticatory apparatus in modern humans affects occlusal contact areas between antagonist teeth influencing macrowear and chewing efficiency during ontogeny.

Six ultrasonic crystals (Ø2 mm) were implanted into the tongue body to form a wedge-shaped configuration in six 12-week-old Yucatan minipigs. These crystals allow recording of the distance changes in bilateral lengths (RL/LL) and base thicknesses (RT/LT), and anterior (AW) and posterior (dorsal and ventral, PDW and PVW) widths during natural feeding. Results indicated that changes in all measured dimensions were stereotypical with considerable regularity. The greatest dimensional changes during chewing were seen in the AW (33.3%), significantly larger than those in other dimensions (P < 0.05-0.001). During ingestion, change in all widths and thicknesses reduced significantly compared with those during chewing (P < 0.05), but changes in the lengths (RL/LL) were significantly larger than those during chewing (P < 0.01). During drinking, overall dimensional changes reduced and amplitudes were symmetrically distributed in all dimensions. The timing analysis indicated that, during chewing, the reversal of dimensional decrease to increase in the PVW occurred first, followed by those of PDW, AW, RT/LT, and RL/LL (P < 0.05). During ingestion, the AW started widening first. Time sequence of these reversals during drinking was similar to that during chewing, but RT/LT thickening was behind RL/LL lengthening. These results suggested that during natural feeding, regional tongue deformations are rhythmic and stereotypical similar to jaw movement. The reversals of expansion-contraction of various dimensions are not synchronous, but occur in a sequential manner in timing. Tongue internal deformations are task-specific in both timing and amplitude. The dimensional expansionscontractions are dominant in the transverse and sagittal planes during chewing and ingestion, respectively, but are smaller and more symmetrically distributed across various dimensions during drinking. The tongue is the only muscular organ in the craniofacial region and plays fundamental roles in almost all oral motor functions, including drinking, ingestion, chewing, swallowing, respiration, and speech. A number of neuromuscular diseases, such as epilepsy, multiple sclerosis, cerebral palsy, muscular dystrophy, Parkinson's and Huntington's diseases, and myasthenia gravis, signi fi cantly affect tongue motor functions. These negative impacts include reduced or complete loss of control in moving the tongue (tongue displacement) and/or changing the shape of the tongue (tongue deformation), tongue spasm or convulsion, muscle dystonia, and ankyloglossia. Several sensational disorders may also occur due to these neuromuscular diseases, including burning tongue, loss of taste function (ageusia), decreased ability to taste (hypogeusia), and changes in taste (dysgeusia). In recent decades, extensive studies have demonstrated that tongue size, volume, position, and neuromuscular activity, especially in the tongue base, are signi fi cantly implicated in obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), a potential life-threatening disorder of breathing, which affects 2-4% of the adult population (Schwab 2003 ;Schwab et al . 2003 ) .In addition to the complex network of interwoven fi bers and fi ber bundles from four intrinsic and four extrinsic tongue muscles which facilitate complicated and delicate tongue kinematics, the tongue also has a large network of subdividing nerve branches and blood supply. Studies have shown that the hypoglossal nerve alone has more than 50 primary branches innervating tongue musculature (Mu and Sanders 1999 ) .
