Sternoclavicular dislocation: case report and surgical technique

Abstract: Sternoclavicular dislocations account for less than 5% of all dislocations of the scapular belt. Most cases of anterior dislocation of the sternoclavicular joint do not present symptoms. However, some patients may develop chronic anterior instability and remain symptomatic, and surgical treatment is indicated in these cases. There is a scarcity of reports in the literature relating to reconstruction using the long palmar tendon in cases of traumatic anterior instability. Although rare, these injuries deserve r… Show more

“…The prerequisite for causing SCJ dislocation is a powerful force of vector, which can only be seen during high-energy trauma like road traffic accidents (RTA), sporting accidents, or falls from height [3]. Previous literature also mentions RTA and sporting activities like motocross racing as major causes [3][4][5][7][8][9]. Heavy activity in the form of bench press in the gym has also been reported [10].…”

“…13 A figure-of-eight reconstruction was evaluated in a biomechanical analysis and found to provide relatively robust fixation for the SC joint. 12,14 For this technique, unicortical drill holes are made 15 mm lateral to the SC joint on the anterior-superior and anterior-inferior facet of the clavicle. Small curettes are used to connect the drill holes subcortically.…”
