This research aimed to examine the effects of negative metastereotypes (i.e., patients believe that doctors have negative opinions about them) and conflict experience on doctor-patient relationships. A 2 9 2 experimental study was conducted on 84 outpatients who were randomly assigned to either a negative metastereotype activation (NMSA) condition or a nonnegative metastereotype activation (non-NMSA) condition. Each group consisted of patients with and without conflict experience (CE). Intergroup anxiety and doctor-patient relationships were subsequently assessed. Results showed that NMSA and CE increased intergroup anxiety and undermined doctor-patient relationships. In addition, the interaction between NMSA and CE on doctor-patient relationships was significant. When negative metastereotypes were activated, patients with CE showed more unfavorable relationships with doctors as compared with those under non-NMSA activation condition; no metastereotype effects on doctor-patient relationships were observed among patients without CE. These findings provided insights into an important predictor of doctor-patient relationships as well as its mechanism. Future studies should consider negative metastereotypes and CE to develop interventions for improving doctor-patient relationships.

At present, the contradiction between doctors and patients is widespread, especially for children's hospitals, and our research aimed to found the relationship between personality traits (neuroticism dimension, conscientiousness dimension, extroversion dimension, and agreeableness dimension), gender, age, waiting time and doctor-patient contradictions in the outpatient department. Methods NEO Five Factor Inventory was used to carry out NEO Five Personality Test on the parents in the waiting area of outpatient department in Shanghai Children's Hospital. The self-made observation table was used to record whether there were conflicts between parents and health care workers among the whole waiting time and the general information (age, gender) of parents. Logistic regression were used to analyze the relationship between nurturers' personality traits, age, gender, waiting time and the conflicts between parents and health care workers in the outpatient department. Result Among the total of 8 factors, 3 factors were the independent influencing factors of doctorpatient contradiction, that is, the age (OR=1.086, 95% CI 1.016~1.161 P=0.015), waiting time (OR=2.745, 95% CI 1.936~3.892 P<0.0001) and neuroticism (OR=1.108, 95% CI 1.055~1.162 P<0.0001) were the risk factors of doctor-patient contradiction. The result showed that nurturers' personality traits had an influence on the doctor-patient contradictions; high neuroticism nurturers were more likely to have doctor-patient contradictions. All in all, with longer waiting time, the older with higher neurotic scores were more luckily to have conflicts with health care workers. Conclusion The hospital can start from the factors that affect the doctor-patient contradictions to seek benefits and avoid disadvantages, improving the quality and safety of consultation and providing good medical experience for children so as to enhance the overall competitiveness of the hospital.

RESUMO Objetivo: Avaliar as atitudes dos alunos internos de um curso de Medicina a respeito da relação médico-paciente, tendo como dimensões desta relação o cuidar e o compartilhar. Métodos: Trata-se de um estudo transversal descritivo com abordagem quantitativa. No desenvolvimento da pesquisa foi utilizado um questionário com dados sociodemográficos ocupacionais e a Patient-Practitioner Orientation Scale (PPOS), que avalia a relação médico-paciente na perspectiva de estudantes. Foram entrevistados 136 alunos internos de um curso de Medicina de uma universidade de Goiânia (GO). Resultados: A média de idade dos alunos internos pesquisados foi de 24,7 (± 2,8), sendo 90 do sexo feminino (66,7%) e 128 (94,1%) solteiros. Os escores entre todos os alunos internos foram: global (4,48 ± 1,56), compartilhar (3,92 ± 1,59) e cuidar (5,04 ± 1,31). As mulheres apresentaram escores maiores no que tange ao fator “compartilhar” (3,97 ± 11,61) em relação aos homens (3,82 ± 1,54), com p = 0,034, e também na média global, feminino (4,51 ± 1,57) e masculino (4,40 ± 1,55), com p = 0,047. No fator “compartilhar”, aqueles que afirmaram ter realizado estágio extracurricular (3,98 ± 1,62) tiveram melhor escore do que os que não fizeram (3,81 ± 1,53), com p = 0,033. Os estudantes que apontaram a contribuição social na escolha do curso de Medicina (4,00 ± 1,58) apresentaram melhor escore no fator “compartilhar”. Conclusão: A maioria dos alunos internos pesquisados teve a atenção voltada à figura do médico e não à do paciente, o que é demonstrado principalmente pelo decréscimo dos escores no final dos períodos de formação. Em contrapartida, os acadêmicos acreditam que as expectativas, sentimentos e circunstâncias da vida do paciente possam interferir no tratamento. Mulheres, alunos que realizaram atividades extracurriculares durante o curso e estudantes que apontaram a contribuição social na escolha do curso apresentaram melhores resultados sob o ponto de vista de dialogar e permitir que o paciente faça parte do tratamento.
