When faced with the daunting and exciting task of studying biodiversity, one must necessarily come to terms with a few challenging knowledge gaps, the so‐called biodiversity shortfalls. Given that biodiversity is inherently multidimensional, it seems rather natural to admit that hitherto unrecognized shortfalls, on other distinct aspects of biodiversity, should be considered. Here, we introduce the Haeckelian shortfall, which has as its nexus organismal ontogeny, and refers to the relative scarcity of knowledge about the distinct semaphoronts of a substantial fraction of all known species. The Haeckelian shortfall has a profound relevance on the matter of total evidence, in the context of systematics, besides several indirect effects on the other shortfalls, as they all are intimately interconnected. The importance of studying distinct semaphoronts is crystal clear: Besides the purest and most descriptive access to the ontogeny of species (the idiographic aspect), assessing those semaphoronts will certainly promote the advancement of relevant nomothetic knowledge, contributing to an increasingly meaningful eco–evo–devo. Overcoming the Haeckelian shortfall is certainly a major challenge in our task of knowing and preserving biodiversity.

The enigmatic genus Stenocrates Burmeister has 52 species that are widely distributed from Mexico to Argentina, but mainly in South America. In the present study, the larva of the third instar and pupa of Stenocrates agricola Dechambre & Hardy, 2004 are described and illustrated based on specimens from Argentina, this being the first description of immatures for the genus. The adult is also redescribed, significantly expanding the number of characters and providing information on the natural history of this species. In addition, 28 species of Cyclocephalini and 20 species of Pentodontini are morphologically compared, emphasizing the most useful larval characters used among these beetles. Stenocrates agricola shows frequent and common characters of Pentodontini species but scarce (and even absent) characters typical of Cyclocephalini species, including some considered diagnostic for this tribe. Accordingly we consider that the tribal position of Stenocrates remains controversial and more study is needed to clarify the tribal status of Stenocrates. We believe that larval morphology provides important information in systematics studies that can clarify tribal relationships within the Dynastinae.

Melolonthidae beetles have been proposed as bioindicators because of their important role in the ecosystem and sensitivity to disturbance processes. However, the assemblage structure of these species in Argentina is unknown. In this study, the first attempt at determining Melolonthidae diversity, we analysed the abundance and diversity of the Melolonthidae assemblage and the species richness turnover over a period of three years. We collected samples in a gallery forest relict of a small protected area in which two light traps were installed. We collected a total of 474 specimens belonging to 38 species, two of which are new records for Argentina. The assemblage was characterised by numerous rare species, and the richness and diversity as well as the distribution of species abundance varied over the three years of the study. Replacement values varied based on the similarity indices that were used. Selected environmental variables (relative humidity, temperature and rainfall) were correlated with the richness and the abundance of the beetles. Our results suggest that the community of Melolonthidae could be considered dynamic, even over relatively short periods of time. Rare species play a major role in analyses of the similarity between assemblages and could suggest exaggerated turnover values. The high richness of the study area may be due to its good state of preservation or to its small area, which allows the entry of species from surrounding environments, showing how complex and fluid the Melolonthidae community can be in small patches of forest.
