Individuals with intellectual disability (ID) tend to have a sedentary lifestyle, with low physical fitness and an increased risk of chronic diseases. One reason for the prevalence of a sedentary lifestyle is the existence of barriers to participation in physical activity (PA). The purpose of this systematic review is to update knowledge about the perceived barriers of PA participation in individuals with ID. Electronic searches were carried out in the PubMed, Scopus, SPORTDiscus and Web of Science databases, from September 2020 to May 2021, and included articles published between January 2016 and May 2021. The terms used were: “mental retardation”, “intellectual disability”, “intellectual disabilities”, “physical activity”, “motor activity”, “barriers”, “obstacles”, “embarrassment” and “constraint”, in combination with the Boolean operators “AND” or “OR”. After the methodological process, five studies were included for analysis. These studies revealed the existence of several perceived barriers to regular PA participation, which were grouped into five main groups: personal (6 topics), family (4 topics), social (13 topics), financial (1 topic) and environmental (1 topic). The knowledge and identification of participation barriers can be of extreme importance both to institutions and professionals aiming to enhance the participation of individuals with ID in regular PA programs.

OBJETIVO: Objetivou-se identificar as preferências, barreiras e motivações para a prática de atividade física por pessoas com deficiência física. MÉTODOS: A pesquisa é de caráter qualitativo, do tipo descritivo. Participaram do estudo 34 indivíduos com deficiência física, 27 eram ativos e 7 inativos, com média de idades de 35,5 anos. Para as coletas dos dados, utilizaram-se questionários sobre preferência, motivações e barreiras para prática de atividade física. RESULTADOS: A partir dos resultados, as preferências identificadas envolvem a prática esportiva, especialmente, o basquetebol em cadeira de rodas. Sobre as motivações, a dimensão saúde se sobressaiu como o fator motivacional mais citado. Quanto às barreiras, a falta de equipamentos disponíveis e adaptados foi a mais evidenciada para a prática de atividades físicas. CONCLUSÃO: Estes resultados subsidiam a criação de atividades específicas considerando as preferências e as motivações apresentadas pelas pessoas com deficiência física, aliado à tentativa de minimizar as barreiras para esta prática.ABSTRACT. Physical activity and physical disability: preferences, motivations and barriers for the practice of physical activity.OBJECTIVE: The objective was to identify preferences, barriers and motivations for the practice of physical activity by people with physical disabilities. METHODS: The research is qualitative, of the descriptive type. Thirty-four individuals with physical disability participated in the study, 27 were active and 7 were inactive, with an average age of 35.5 years. For data collection, questionnaires were used on preferences, motivations and barriers for the practice of physical activity. RESULTS: From the results, the identified preferences involve the sports practice, mainly, the wheelchair basketball. On the motivations, the health dimension stood out as the most cited motivational factor, both by the active and the inactive subjects. As for the barriers, the lack of equipment available and adapted was the most evidenced for the practice of physical activities. CONCLUSION: These results subsidize the creation of specific activities considering the preferences and motivations presented by people with physical disabilities, along with the attempt to minimize the barriers for this practice.

Background:A study estimated the biopsychosocial factors related to active physical behavior in the Brazilian population with and without chronic non-transmissible disease (CNCD).Methodology: Cross-sectional study of the National Health Survey (NHS) in Brazil, with 60,202 individuals. The outcome was physically active behavior. The independent variables were social characteristics, lifestyle and health. Cox regression was applied to estimate the prevalence ratio (PR).Results: 29,666 (48.3%; 95% CI: 47.0–50.0) reported having CNCD. Not being a smoker or alcoholic, living in an urban area, having informal social support, you are in class A, high schooling as well as paid work are more associated with active lifestyle in both groups. However, in the group without CNCD, the female sex, having some disability and not having private health insurance were more associated with sedentary behavior, while in the group with CNCD, being elderly, white and not having restful sleep are associated with sedentary lifestyle.Conclusion: People with and without CNCD in Brazil have very close active behavior, however, some biopsychosocial factors such as: sex, age, lifestyle, socioeconomic level are unevenly associated with the active lifestyle in the groups. Thus, therapeutic or preventive proposals as well as public policies for health promotion must observe these distinctions when elaborating their actions.
