Neonatal and pediatric extracorporeal membrane oxygenation in developing Latin American countries

Abstract: The best results in short- and long-term survival are in patients with isolated respiratory diseases. Today extracorporeal membrane oxygenation therapy is a standard therapy in some Latin American referral centers. It is hoped that these new extracorporeal membrane oxygenation centers will have a positive impact on the survival of newborns and children with respiratory or cardiac failure, and that they will be available for an increasing number of patients from this region in the near future.

“…The mortality rate was slightly decreased but no significant difference in two period due to the very low number of ECMO patients in pre-ECMO committee program period. The ECMO survival rate and survival rate to discharge were 70 and 50%, respectively, which were comparable to the previous studies ( 12 , 13 , 16 , 17 ). This study found the ECMO survival rate to discharge in VA and VV were 50%, while the ELSO registry summarized that the mortality rate of VA ECMO was 51.9% and VV ECMO was 61.8% in Asia pacific registration ( 18 ).…”

“…Additionally, patients with AKI were shown to require a longer duration of ECMO support, longer ventilator days, and had a higher mortality rate (17,21,22). A recent meta-analysis study in 3,523 pediatric patients on ECMO demonstrated that AKI was significantly associated with reduced survival outcome (23).…”

“…Nos últimos anos, vários biomarcadores da HP foram investigados com o intuito de buscar um método eficiente e não invasivo de estratificação e monitorização (PLÁCIDO et al, 2017). Nos anos 1970, a oxigenação por membrana extracorpórea foi usada para administrar a insuficiência respiratória e a hipertensão pulmonar e, de certa forma, posteriormente para assistência cardíaca ventricular (KATTAN et al, 2017).…”

“…2 Since the 1970s, ECMO has been used as a therapeutic alternative at most tertiary-care hospitals in the United States and Europe; however, in Mexico its use was not established until 2013. 3 In Latin American countries, some investigation has been conducted in which the use of this procedure is reported, but with a high mortality rate. 4 After 2013, the pediatric ECMO program was initiated at the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit of Christus Muguerza High Specialty Hospital in Monterrey, Nuevo Leon, Mexico.…”
