Non-specific colitis among patients with colitis: frequency and relation to inflammatory bowel disease, a prospective study

Abstract: Background and study aim  The term non-specific colitis refers to an inflammatory condition of the colon that microscopically lacks the characteristic features of any specific form of colitis and is commonly seen in pathology reports of colonoscopy biopsies. In fact, it has been questioned whether it is a separate pathological entity or it is merely an intermediate stage in the course of inflammatory bowel disease. This study was conducted to estimate the prevalence of non-specific colitis among pati… Show more

“…The expertise of the operator of both endoscopist and pathologist, the instruments, size of the samples, the timing for biopsy, and reference of the clinical data submitted to the pathologist, were the affecting factors. 13,15 In this study, patients with histopathological results of NSCC mostly came with chronic diarrhea without hematochezia. In contrast with a study from Moussa et al, the majority of NSCC histopathology findings admitted due to chronic diarrhea accompanied by hematochezia.…”

“…In addition, they followed up the patients with NSC for 6 months and reexamined 6 patients owing to persistence of symptoms by colonoscopy and found they had florid IBD on rebiopsy. 15 In our study, we could not determine whether the patients in the NSC group are normal or have another specific diagnosis because we did not follow-up these patients after biopsy.…”

“…A recent study in 2019 by Emara and colleagues evaluated prospectively 80 patients with clear indications for colonoscopy including IBS and non-IBS cases after excluding those with known specific colitis (infection or IBD) or colonic malignancy and found that 67 patients (83.75%) had NSC. In addition, they followed up the patients with NSC for 6 months and reexamined 6 patients owing to persistence of symptoms by colonoscopy and found they had florid IBD on rebiopsy 15. In our study, we could not determine whether the patients in the NSC group are normal or have another specific diagnosis because we did not follow-up these patients after biopsy.…”

“…The term of non-specific colitis refers to inflammation in colon that microscopically does not have characteristic features of any specific form of colitis and usually found in pathology report from colonoscopy biopsy. This term is used for colonic inflammation that does not have specific pathological features from common cause of colitis (Emara et al, 2019). In this study, the samples with the lymphoid aggregate features and erosion on the surface epithelium were included into the non-specific colitis interpretation.…”
