“…Further analyses are warranted on Australian data to investigate more comprehensively the different speed of incidence rate changes by age group, including sensitivity analyses of age group categories. In our study, taking into account latency period estimates for asbestos exposure, 46 younger people with malignant mesothelioma are likely to have developed it from highly elevated levels of asbestos exposure through the manufacturing and installation of asbestos-containing products, neighbourhood exposure as children or asbestos mining and production. Bans on the use of asbestos-containing products and asbestos mining implemented over time will have changed the disease trajectory for these younger age groups.…”

“…Current therapies, with the exception of surgery in very early disease states, are not curative [12]. The most recent statistics on MM mortality show that there were 2704 deaths in the USA in 2005 with little evidence that rates are declining [13]. Although asbestos use has been restricted in many western countries, it is still mined in Russia, China, Canada, Brazil, Kazakhstan and Zimbabwe [13,14].…”

Although asbestos use has been restricted in many western countries, it is still mined in Russia, China, Canada, Brazil, Kazakhstan and Zimbabwe [13,14]. It has been estimated approximately 125 million people are exposed to asbestos globally within their place of work, often in third world countries that do not have strictly regulated workplace safety controls.…”

“…However, the long latency period of 20 -40 years prior to the development of the disease explains the recent steady increase in incidence of new cases. This currently represents about 3000 new cases per year in the US, [1] and corresponds to the peak use of asbestos in the last century [2][3][4]. In 1989, the US Environmental Protection Agency banned most asbestos-containing products.…”
