The cuajilote (Parmentiera edulis D.C.) tree produces fibrous fruits with a high content of lignocellulosic compounds. However, this fruit and their fibers have been scarcely studied. For this reason, an integral study of their cellular architecture, physicochemical, micromechanical, and structural properties in two maturity stages were carried out. Physicochemical tests, light, confocal and electron microscopy, microindentation, and X‐ray diffraction were used for the characterization of fruit and their fibers. Chemical analysis showed that the unripe fruits have the highest cellulose content (42.17%), but in ripe fruit the cellulose content decreases (32.76%) while lignin content increases from 35.26 to 40.79%, caused by the lignification of the sclerenchyma fibers. Microstructural and micromechanical studies in the different regions of the fruit provided relevant information about its cellular architecture, distribution of lignocellulosic compounds and its role in the micromechanical properties of their fibers. The thickening cell wall of sclerenchyma fibers was caused by the cellular lignification of the ripe fruits. According to the physicochemical and structural studies, cuajilote fibers are comparable to other fibers obtained from crops rich in lignocellulosic compounds. The current study provided new knowledge about the cellular architecture of fruit and criteria for selecting the ripening stage adequate for the extraction of cellulose or lignin. Furthermore, information regarding the micromechanical properties of their fibers and which structural arrangement could be more convenient for mechanical reinforcement of biodegradable materials was obtained.

In this review, the concept of fruit morphogenesis is treated in the context of implementation of the evo-devo approach in carpology. A new viewpoint on the fruit morphogenesis is proposed and justified, comprising the pre-anthetic, as well as post-anthetic periods of fruit development, id est, development of the gynoecium, and development of the fruit itself. It is proposed to recognize ontogenetical (individual) and evolutionary (historical) aspects of fruit morphogenesis, the first of them we can study directly, while the second aspect can be only hypothesized or treated as a theoretical model of fruit evolution in consequence of some presumed changes in the individual fruit morphogenesis. In this article these aspects are named as "ontomorphogenesis" and "phylomorphogenesis" of the fruit, correspondingly. Our concept of ontomorphogenesis of the fruit involves four components that could not be brought together, such as changes in the morphological structure of the gynoecium, abscission of the extragynecial floral parts and the style, histogenesis of the fruit wall and other fruit parts, and terminal stages of the fruit morphogenesis (dehiscence, splitting, or abscission). The current state of studies of these components in the individual and evolutionary contexts is discussed. By examining the patterns of fruit evolution, we should consider factors acting at both the post-anthetic and pre-anthetic periods of fruit ontomorphogenesis.

The larva and pupa of the sagrine chrysomelid Mecynodera balyi Clark, 1864 are described and life history notes provided for this species. The larva of Mecynodera balyi is spermophagous and feeds inside seed pods of Pandorea, a vine in the Bignoniaceae. This is the first record of larval spermophagy in any chrysomelid other than Bruchinae, the sister subfamily to Sagrinae. Several morphological features of the immature stages are newly recorded for the Sagrinae. The implications of these new data for systematic placement of Sagrinae are discussed.
