Objective: The coffee is one of the most common beverages with reported health benefits. The coffee extracts are used in cosmetic and pharmacological preparations. The present study deals with the development of Arabica and Civet coffee extract based cosmetic formulas and its stability.Methods: Coffee extracts were prepared by mechanical pressing and solvent extraction methods. The total phenolic content of the extracts was assessed by Folin-Ciocalteu colorimetric method. The body lotion (BL) and hand moisturizing cream (HMC) were formulated, and the stability, heavy metal, and microbial contamination of the products stored at different temperatures for 3 months were evaluated by the organoleptic method, atomic absorption spectrophotometer, and plate assay, respectively. Results:The developed products (BL and HMC) were creamy, slightly dark in color with coffee fragrance. The products were stable, and no changes in color, odor, and texture were observed, for 3 months even at 40°C. BL was found to be not contaminated with lead, whereas, the presence of arsenic and mercury were found in the concentration of <0.16 and <0.09 mg/kg, respectively. The HMC has <0.16 mg/kg of arsenic and <0.09-0.28 mg/kg of mercury, while no lead content was detected. BL and HMC harbor only 253-281 and 231-251 CFU/g, respectively. The products were free from pathogenic microbes. The extract method has not affected the quality of the product. Conclusion:The BL and HMC were stable and contain negligible amount of heavy metal and found to be microbiologically safe. The presence of coffee extract in the products nourishes and protects the skin and suitable for topical applications.

Today, there is a rising demand and ongoing search for novel plant-derived phytochemicals in the cosmetic market owing to the growing consumer expectations worldwide for green and natural health products. Various plant ingredients, including polyphenols, oils, volatile oils, vitamins and other herbal extracts, have been extensively used in herbal cosmetics. Recent advances in encapsulation technologies have greatly improved their chemical stability, biocompatibility, skin permeability and dermocosmetic efficiency when applied topically. This comprehensive review summarizes the up-to-date information on encapsulated plant ingredients tailored for dermocosmetic application with a focus on the development of novel delivery systems. An overview of the commonly used techniques for carrier characterization, performance-related properties and toxicological evaluation is also included, which might provide guidance for researchers to select or develop appropriate assay systems. PolyphenolsPolyphenols are secondary metabolites in plants, and the presence of the array of phenolic hydroxyl groups makes them potent free radical scavengers and antioxidants, which are favoured in antiageing cosmetics [1]. In the search for oils of commercial interest that serve as new sources for the generation of cosmetic, pharmaceutical, or nutraceutical products, the green coffee beans oil (Coffea arabica L.) was studied. This research aimed to evaluate the oxidative stability of microencapsulated green coffee oil (Coffea arabica) by spray drying. The green coffee oil emulsions were produced by microfluidization using mesquite gum and octenyl succinic anhydride modified starches (OSA-starch) as wall-material. The particle size, polydispersity, and zeta potential on the microfluidized emulsions were optimized. The results showed that microfluidization had positive effects on the reduction of the emulsion droplets and the zeta potential, developing stable emulsions for both polymers. Then, the optimal microfluidization conditions were used to evaluate the impact of the spray drying conditions on the microencapsulation efficiency, morphology, and oxidation stability of the green coffee oil microcapsules under accelerated storage conditions (32% relative humidity (RH) at 25 °C). The microencapsulation efficiency was approximately 98% for both wall-materials. The morphology of the microcapsules showed spherical shapes and polydisperse sizes, a typical characteristic of spray-dried powders. The oxidative stability of the microcapsules was lower than the bulk green coffee oil (87.39 meq of O2/kg of oil), reaching values of 60.83 meq of O2/kg of oil for mesquite gum and 70.67 meq of O2/kg of oil for OSA-starch. The microcapsules produced have good potential for the development of nutraceutical foods or cosmetic formulations with adequate stability.
