Lymphangiogenesis and angiogenesis in oral cavity and lower lip squamous cell carcinoma

Abstract: According to our results, it seems that the search for additional factors other than those related to the vasculature should continue, to help clarify the differences in biologic behavior between lower lip and oral cavity squamous cell carcinomas.

“…In the current study, a similar proportion in the 3 groups was evidenced, with a significantly higher number of CD34+ than D2‐40+ microvessels. Although without age group distinction, similar results were observed assessing OSCC and lip SCC patients. To date, there are only 2 studies assessing angiogenesis and lymphangiogenesis in young OSCC patients, which indicate that possibly the tumor aggressiveness in young OSCC patients, reported in other studies, cannot be associated with the MVD levels.…”

“…18 When comparing these sites, a worse outcome has been suggested for oral tumors. 13,14 Not many studies have compared EMT and CCI in malignancies and it is not clear which pattern is more aggressive or whether they are fundamentally any different in terms of invasion into adjacent or distant tissues. Basic investigations on CCI, have suggested particular advantages of this pattern over EMT in terms of neoplastic progression.…”

“…3,4,5,8,12 There are limited studies on the invasion pattern of OSCC 3,12 ; however, similar investigations in lip SCCs have not been performed. OSCC typically has a worse prognosis than lower lip SCC 13,14 which might be related to a number of factors including their different molecular expression profiles. Neoplastic invasion that is known to occur in two main patterns of EMT and CCI with specific immunohistochemical profiles 3,4,12 is an important factor in metastasis which has a major effect on prognosis.…”

“…The exact pathogenesis of TSCC has not been uncovered till date. Tumor microenvironment (TME) of TSCC plays a crucial role in its origination and progression, in which new growth of blood vessels, namely "tumor angiogenesis" can transport blood supply, nutrient and oxygen to the tumors and stimulate the proliferation of cancer cells, while new formation of lymph vessels, namely "tumor lymphogenesis" actively contributes to cancer dissemination via the newly formed lymphatic vessels [2,3].…”
