Overview of newborn hearing screening programs in Brazilian maternity hospitals

Abstract: Transient otoacoustic emissions were the most often used screening methodology. Coverage varied widely, and only a few maternity wards achieved 95% of the cases screened. Referral to diagnostic procedures was under 4%, but lack of adherence can be considered a barrier to successful follow-up. The occurrence of hearing loss ranged from 0% to 1.09%. The involvement of government, physicians, and society is necessary, so that the goals of newborn hearing screening can be achieved.

“…Findings are consistent with results reported from a study on frequency of hearing impairment among full-term newborns in Yazd, Iran; where some newborns did not continue with the follow-up visits (19). They are also in agreement with findings from NHS programmes in maternity hospitals in Brazil (20), where loss to follow-up was lower for diagnostic assessment and ranged from 5% to 66% in public hospitals. One of the proposed reasons in this study was that diagnostic evaluations were conducted outside the maternity hospital (20), as in the current study where the protocol entailed diagnostic follow-up at the University clinic which is away from the hospitals where screening occurred.…”

“…So, an unequal distribution, together with a reduced number of professionals working in public services, may contribute directly to the low NHS coverage in the northeastern region (8) . In the years of 2000, 2005 and 2010 there was an evolution in the speech-language and audiology area that can be observed when analyzing the procedures accomplished by the SLPA professionals.…”

“…Among the current challenges in newborn hearing screening (NHS) in the Brazilian scenario, there are the non-compliance to the program and the variability between protocols within different services. This last one makes the analysis and the comparison between programs difficult (8) . Spatial analysis can provide a visual evaluation of the distribution pattern of an event through maps.…”
