Phylogenetic characterization of the first Ungulate tetraparvovirus 2 detected in pigs in Brazil

Abstract: Ungulate tetraparvovirus 2 (UTV2), formerly known as porcine hokovirus due to its discovery in Hong Kong, is closely related to a Primate tetraparvovirus (human PARV-4) and Ungulate tetraparvovirus 1 (bovine hokovirus). Until now, UTV2 was detected in European, Asian and North American countries, but its occurrence in Latin America is still unknown. This study describes the first report of UTV2 in Brazil, as well as its phylogenetic characterization. Tissue samples (lymph node, lung, liver, spleen and kidney) … Show more

“…For example, the presence of the PHoV (also known as porcine partetravirus) nucleotide sequence was investigated in source animals and in islet macrobeads. To date, this virus has not been cultured or isolated and the only evidence of its existence are the findings of the genomic sequence . We have found evidence of the PHoV sequence in various porcine tissues including pancreas, mesenteric lymph nodes, donor serum, and frozen vendor supplied porcine serum used during islet isolation and macrobead culture.…”

“…These include the frequent detection of porcine hokovirus in hunted wild boar in Portugal 48 and a bovine hokovirus in domestic yaks 49 . In South America, another hokovirus was found to be endemic in a survey of Brazilian pig herds, in which post-weaning multi-systemic wasting syndrome was common 50 , and a novel porcine hokovirus (referred to as porcine parvovirus 6, or PPV6) has been associated with foetal loss in pigs in China 51 , 52 .…”

“…We detected strains of ungulate tetraparvovirus— a virus in the genus Tetraparvovirus —in cattle from the South of Brazil. Ungulate tetraparvovirus 2 —formerly known as porcine hokovirus—has previously been identified in swine in Brazil [ 31 ]. However, ungulate tetraparvovirus 1 —formerly known as bovine hokovirus—has not previously been reported outside Asia.…”
