The role of microRNAs in enteroviral infections

Abstract: The genus Enterovirus, a member of the Picornavirus family, are RNA viruses that can cause poliomyelitis, hand-food-mouth disease, viral meningitis or meningoencephalitis, viral myocarditis and so on. MicroRNAs are a class of highly conserved, small noncoding RNAs recognized as important regulators of gene expression. Recent studies found that MicroRNAs play a significant role in the infection of Enterovirus, such as enterovirus 71, coxsackievirus B3 and other Enterovirus. Enteroviral infection can alter the e… Show more

“…NF-κB signaling-related molecules IRAK2 were found modulated by miR-1246 and miR-320a, and TRAF4 was found modulated by miR-1246 and miR-760-3p in PPRV infected lung of goats in the present study. Interferon (IFN)-mediated pathway is a crucial part of the cellular response against viral infection (Wu et al, 2015). TRAF6, a major element in IFN production (Yoshida et al, 2008) was suppressed by PPRV-induced miR-21-3p and miR-320a in the lung of sheep.…”

“…MicroRNAs (miRNAs) were recently put forward as a convincible marker that circulates in the bloodstream [31]. MiRNA is involved in many biological processes in cells and its expression is associated with cancers and other diseases, such as enteroviral infections [32]. Furthermore, miRNA has been considered as a biomarker for diagnosing various diseases in clinical practices [33,34].…”

“…Since their discovery in 1993, a range of knowledge has been accumulated, showing the importance of miRNA in cellular physiological and pathological processes, including cell development, metabolism, proliferation, differentiation, and apoptosis (Ebert and Sharp, 2012 ; Yates et al, 2013 ). Over the past few decades, mounting evidence has supported the notion that the miRNAs may serve as key regulators of viral entry and replication (Wu et al, 2015 ). This is perhaps best illustrated by the observation that hsa-miR-122, a liver-specific miRNA, is able to bind with the 5′ UTR of hepatitis C virus (HCV) to stabilize HCV genomic RNA (Jopling et al, 2005 ).…”

“…To date, it has become increasingly clear that the miRNAs play a pivotal role in EV71 replication by altering the level of cellular miRNAs, which in turn regulates the expression of viral or host genes (Cui et al, 2010 ; Wu et al, 2015 ; Xun et al, 2015 ). Here, it is noteworthy that the downregulation of DGCR8 (DiGeorge critical region 8), an essential cofactor for the biogenesis of miRNAs, results in the inhibition of EV71 infection (Lui et al, 2014 ).…”
