Abstract: M. pneumoniae at a high bacterial load could be an etiologic agent of respiratory tract disease, whereas the etiologic role of MP at a low bacterial load remains to be determined.

“…Only the repMP1-based approach was able to detect 0.2 CFU/5 l in all parallel runs. Results of studies indicated that the bacterial load might influence the severity of disease after infection with M. pneumoniae (16,17). The data of the present and other comparison reports confirmed that the PCR approach used will influence the positivity rate of tested samples and the measured load of M. pneumoniae in the specimens.…”

“…Despite differences among the methods regarding PCR efficiency, C T values, and analytical and clinical sensitivity, all systems detect at least 20 CFU/5 l of sample. With regard to the quantitative results of other studies based on real-time PCR (16,17,20,21), this can be considered an acceptable level of test sensitivity for most clinical questions. …”

“…Seasonal peaks of MP infection in LRTI has been reported in our previous studies. Outbreaks began in summer months and peaked during August and September in Suzhou [ 9 , 18 ]. The seasonal distribution in our non-KD group is in line with our previous studies.…”

“…It is believed that high fever is more likely to occur when the MP load is greater than 10 7 copies/µl. However, the relationship between low MP load and pathogenesis is not clear 17 .…”
