1-Methylcyclopropene as an Effective Ethylene Inhibitor to Extend Musa acuminata Colla ‘Muli’ Postharvest Quality

Abstract: Musa acuminata Colla ‘Muli’ is one of the most popular banana variety in Indonesia. As a commodity that is consumed fresh, is important to regulate the ethylene production of climacteric fruit in order to extend the shelf life and reduce deterioration. 1-MCP (1-Methylcycloprophene) is a potential chemical that can effectively regulate ethylene production in Muli bananas. In this study, 1-MCP in different concentrations (0, 0.25, 0.50 and 1.00 µL L-1) were applied at two maturation stages to observe the effects… Show more

“…It was further reported that 1-MCP retarded the development of colour of peel and accumulation of total soluble solids (TSS), reduced softening of flesh and weight loss, and maintained ascorbic acid content during storage of banana fruits. Mubarok et al, [45] have observed that the application of 1-MCP prevents the change of TSS until 12 days of storage in mature green fruit, but the change of TSS occurred in mature fruits. The experiment, therefore suggest that TSS increased due to the initiation of fruit ripening in mature stage of banana.…”

“…According to the Mubarok et al, [45], the effect of 1-MCP is usually determined upon the stage of fruit maturity. After climacteric stage, ethylene biosynthesis process come to the peak and also the ethylene is bound to receptor.…”

“…Musa acuminata Colla (M. acuminata henceforth) is a banana species that is native to Southern Asia and one of the earliest plants that were domesticated in human history [9]. It has since been introduced and cultivated in different parts of the world [10] [11]. It is an evergreen tree-like perennial plant with a trunk (known as the pseudo stem) composed of packed layers of leaf sheaths emerging from completely or partially buried corm.…”
