1-Butyl-3-methylimidazolium Salts as New Catalysts to Produce Epoxy-anhydride Polymers with Improved Properties

Abstract: We report the curing process of epoxy oligomers by using isomethyltetrahydrophthalic anhydride catalyzed with 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium salts. Catalytic action has been ascertained to be dependent on the nature of anion. Salts with(Br-)and(PO4-)anions appeared to be most active. Formation of salt adducts with epoxy resin and anhydride is shown. Polymers having higher values of strength and glass transition temperature—as compared with similar epoxy systems cured in the presence of tertiary amines as catalyst… Show more

“…The ionic liquids (ILs) can be used as catalytic epoxy resin crosslinkers solely [1][2][3][4][5][6][7] or in combination with other conventional hardeners, such as polyamines [3,[8][9][10][11] or anhydrides [12,13]. Epoxy compositions with ILs exhibited latency at room temperature which could be regulated in a rather wide range from a few days (e.g.…”

“…Because of their excellent thermal stability, negligible volatility, and tunable acidity, acidic ionic liquids (ILs) have been utilized as environmental friendly reagents for organic reactions [11][12][13][14][15][16][17]. However, ILs have been proved to have some disadvantages, including poor reusability, high viscosity, and large amount requirement for the reaction [18][19][20].…”
