1- and 10-V series array Josephson voltage standards in Nb/Al2O3/Nb technology

Abstract: Josephson arrays containing 2000 and 20 160 Nbl AI2 0 3 INb tunnel junctions produce stable quantized voltage steps up to 1.S and 14.5 V, respectively, with current amplitudes on the order of 100 !tA. In precision measurements these voltage steps proved to be stable for typically 30 min. Fabricating the voltage standards with the help of the Nbl All OJ INb technology results in a long durability.

“…On the other hand, however, a great number of junctions are quite necessary for practical applications. For example, a few thousand or a few tens of thousand junctions in series to each other are required in quantum voltage standard to get zero-crossing Shapiro steps at sufficiently high voltages for 1 V or 10 V standard calibrations 5,6 . With Nb-based junctions both two-dimensional (2D) and three-dimensional (3D) arrays have been reported using a stacked-junction fabrication technique 7,8 , remarkably increasing the package density.…”

“…Despite being beyond the scope of the present work, this remains an interesting issue that would require further investigation. Figure 4(a) shows the emitted radiation power spectrum for a chain of N = 10 3 Nb/AlOx/Nb rectangular junctions 14,17,30,31 driven by a 100 MHz oscillating magnetic field. As we can see, the device is able to provide a power of about 10 pW at 50 GHz (corresponding to the 500-th har- monic of the driving frequency).…”

“…The coupling of the cells could act like weak-linkjunctions in superconductors that can be separated by a very small distance, e.g. in [29]. Those configurations have been extensively investigated in the past [30].…”
