03.30: Connection classification for a space structure jointing system

Abstract

A crucial consideration in the analysis of space structures is the decision of how the connections are to be modelled. This depends on the configuration and dimensions of the structure to be analysed as well as the material and the type of connections employed. A number of attempts for connection classification have been reported and among these two classification systems i.e. classification system in Eurocode 3 and classification system by Bjorhovde et al. have received more attention. These two classification systems have been developed for beam-to-column connections. In order to appraise the two classification systems for a space structure jointing system, a parametric study has been carried out on the effects of connections on compression member behaviour. Based on the obtained results, a methodology for the classification of connections in space structures has been proposed. The proposed classification method uses floating boundaries that give more flexibility to the classification.
