BackgroundElectromagnetic interference (EMI) encompasses electromagnetic field signals that can be detected by a device's circuitry, potentially resulting in adverse effects such as inaccurate sensing, pacing, device mode switching, and defibrillation. EMI may impact the functioning of Cardiac Implantable Electronic Devices (CIEDs) and lead to inappropriate therapy.MethodAn experimental measuring device, a loop antenna mimicking the implantable cardioverted defibrillator (ICD) antenna, was developed, and validated at the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and sent to Wright State University for testing. Two sets of measurements were conducted while the vehicle was connected to a 220‐Volt outlet with charging at ON and OFF. Each measurement set involved three readings at various locations, with the antenna oriented in three different positions to account for diverse patient postures. The experiment utilized a Tesla Model 3 electric vehicle (EV), assessing scenarios both inside and outside the car, including the driver's seat, driver's seat floor, passenger's seat, rear seat, rear seat floor, cup holder, charging port (car), and near the charging station.ResultsThe detected voltage (max 400 to 504 millivolts) around the cup holder inside the car differed from all other measurement scenarios.ConclusionThe investigation highlights the identification of EMI signals originating from an EV) that could potentially interrupt the functionality of a Subcutaneous Implantable Cardioverter‐Defibrillator (S‐ICD). These signals fell within the R‐wave Spectrum of 30–300 Hz. Further in‐vivo studies are essential to determine accurately the level of interference between S‐ICDs and EMI from Electric Vehicles.

As the number of patients having implantable cardioverter defibrillator (ICD) devices is increasing, it is important for the physicians and patients to be aware of situations and conditions that can result in interference with normal functioning of these devices. There are multiple cases of malfunction of ICDs reported in literature and it may be of great significance to have an overview of these incidents for appropriate recognition and future prevention. Here we are reviewing the available literature as well as reporting an interesting case of electromagnetic interference (EMI) resulting from leak of current in pool water causing firing of ICD.

Resumo Apresenta-se o desenvolvimento de um aplicativo para a captura da imagem de displays numéricos, reconhecimento dos dígitos nela contidos e envio dos valores reconhecidos para um sistema que permita gerenciar ensaios de desempenho metrológico em diversos tipos de equipamentos médicos. Utilizando uma webcam e a ferramenta de desenvolvimento Delphi ® , foi criado um algoritmo baseado na segmentação dos dígitos e contagem dos pontos contidos em cada segmento. Tal contagem resulta em um conjunto numérico, como uma espécie de assinatura do dígito. O software possui as fases de treinamento e reconhecimento, além de um modo de avaliação. Para avaliar o desempenho do aplicativo foram aplicados três testes. No primeiro, dez mil valores diferentes foram gerados e reconhecidos, utilizando três webcams de marcas diferentes. No segundo, usando três equipamentos diferentes, foi realizado o reconhecimento de 100 leituras diferentes e a taxa de acerto verificada por comparação visual. No terceiro, o aplicativo foi ajustado para o reconhecimento da temperatura indicada no display de uma incubadora neonatal e comandado, através da interface de comunicação entre aplicativos, por uma versão protótipo de um sistema de gerenciamento de ensaios em equipamentos médicos. Os resultados do primeiro teste apresentaram 100% de acertos para duas webcams e 99,96% para uma terceira. Nos outros testes a taxa de acerto do aplicativo foi de 100%, demonstrando que a aplicação é factível e segura.Palavras-chave Reconhecimento de caracteres, Avaliação de equipamentos médicos, Metrologia, Engenharia clínica.
