In this study, the antioxidant activities of fractions (methanol, hexane, methylene chloride, butanol, ethyl acetate and water) of Solanum nigrum L. extract was investigated. The contents of total phenolic compounds of each fractions of methanol, butanol, methylene chloride, ethyl acetate, hexane and water are 4.41±0.23%, 5.57±0.35%, 9.89±0.19%, 9.86±0.19%, 1.89±0.04%, and 3.18±0.06%, respectively. For assay of antioxidant activity, 1,1-diphenyl-2-picryhydrazyl (DPPH) radical scavenging activity, reducing power and nitrite scavenging activity are evaluated. In DPPH radical scavenging activity, the highest effect was obtained from the fraction of ethyl acetate. Reducing power is ordered as ethyl acetate > methylene chloride > methanol. In nitrite scavenging activity, the highest activity was 5.5% (butanol fraction), whereas hexane fraction did not detected. Overall, antioxidant activities are closely related the content of phenolic compound in extracts of S. nigrum L.
This study examined chemical characterization in commercial dark-fleshed fish (mackerel Scomber japonicus, Japanese Spanish mackerel Scomberomorus niphonius, and Pacific herring Clupea pallasii) to determine their suitability for use as raw materials for seafood products. The volatile basic nitrogen (VBN), heavy metal, radioactivity, polychlorinated biphenyl (PCBs), benzo[a]pyrene, and histamine concentrations were measured. The VBN in all of the dark-fleshed fish was less than 20 mg/100 g, which is the limit for raw materials for seafood processing. Except for mackerel based on the lead (Pb) standards of the European Union (EU), Taiwan, and CODEX, and all fish based on the cadmium (Cd) standards for China and the EU, the commercial dark-fleshed fish were free from total mercury (Hg), Pb, and Cd based on domestic and foreign standards. The radioactivity, polychlorinated biphenyl (PCB), benzo[a]pyrene, and histamine concentrations of the commercial dark-fleshed fish all adhered to the domestic and foreign standards. The commercial dark-fleshed fish tested could all be used as raw materials for seafood products, except for some exported products.
This study was conducted to examine the trend of national health insurance service use with relation to pregnancy, childbirth, and the puerperium among pregnant and postpartum women older than 35 over the last decade.A descriptive analysis was conducted, using the data which were drawn from the "nationwide claim database of Korean National Health Insurance Corporation(NHIC)". Data were composed of the total cases related to pregnancy, childbirth, and the puerperium (International Classification of Disease, 10 th revision [ICD-10] codes O00-O99) from 2001 to 2008. During 2001-2008, the number of pregnant and postpartum women older than 35 had continuously increased and the percentage of them also had increased in both hospital and ambulatory care. There are similar trends in their total use of national health insurance service and total expenditure.According to demographic characteristics, there was the biggest increase of the percentage in residents in large cities, self-employed workers, ones in the highest income level. According to ICD-10 codes, there was the biggest increase of the percentage in O10-O16 (oedema, proteinuria and hypertensive disorders in pregnancy, childbirth and the puerperium). According to the major prevalent disease, there was the biggest increase of the percentage in O60 (preterm labor and delivery). Throughout the past decade, the necessity has been emphasized of supporting pregnant and postpartum women older than 35. But in maternal and child health care, they are in an early stage of development. The findings of this study would be helpful in developing the support programs for the aged pregnant and postpartum women.
