A thiazole type accelerator MBT (2-mercapto benzothiazole) was added into silica filled natural rubber (NR) compound with various concentrations (0, 1, 2, 3, 4 phr). The effects of MBT on the cure rate, mechanical property, degree of rubber-filler interaction (α F ), crosslinking density, and viscoelastic property (tanδ) were investigated. As accelerator concentration increased, the t s2 and t 90 decreased and the crosslinking density and modulus at 300% elongation increased. The tensile strength and elongation increased up to 3 phr and no further increased at 4 phr. The tan δ value measured at room temperature was higher than that of the 70 o C. The α F value was not affected by the addition of MBT. The mechanisms for the vulcanization rate were reviewed. Keywords: 2-mercapto benzothiazole(MBT), silica/natural rubber, cure rate, mechanical properties, vulcanization mechanism.

Formation of a strong 3-dimensional interfacial network structure via chemical reaction between hydroxyl group on silica surface and NR chain by the addition of bis(triethoxysilylpropyl)tetrasulfide (TESPT) into silica-filled NR compound was observed by using Py-GC/MS and SEM. Addition of TESPT into silica-filled NR compound decreased scorch time (t 10 ) due to increased sulfur content, and reduced cure rate index (CRI) via continuous reaction between sulfur atoms in TESPT, which acted as a sulfur donor, and activators and/or accelerators. Addition of TESPT in the compound improved processability and mechanical properties of the compound. Overall, we observed that the addition of TESPT into the silica-filled NR compound formed a silica-TESPT-NR network, and thus the degree of crosslinking was increased resulting in improved mechanical properties.
The effects of silica-silane in CIIR vibration isolation compound were investigated regarding mechanical and dynamic properties. Addition of silica-silane in the compound resulted in higher tear resistance strength and elongation at break than the control, which was increased by 13% and 14%, respectively. Other values such as tensile strength and hardness did not show significant changes. Viscoelastic property results supported that the improvement of tear resistance strength and elongation at break resulted from the formation of 3-dimensional network structure between silica and CIIR. The mechanism of the tear resistance strength and elongation at break improvement was discussed.
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
