A 71-year-old woman was admitted to our hospital with a palpable left breast mass. Mammography showed a microserrated oval mass in the left breast and breast ultrasonography revealed a well-defined mass measuring 20 mm in diameter containing a homogeneous internal echo. Lumpectomy was performed and the mass was diagnosed as a solid papillary carcinoma (SPC), with positive results of immunostaining for chromogranin A and synaptophysin. In addition, the tumor cells also showed positive immunoreactivity for mammalian target of rapamycin (mTOR) and somatostatin receptor 2 (SSTR2). SPC, defined by Maluf et al., is characterized by intraductal epithelial proliferation associated with neuroendocrine differentiation. It would be worthwhile to carry out studies in the future to confirm the therapeutic efficacy of mTOR inhibitors and somatostatin analogs in cases of SPC of the breast.
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
