The Dieckmann condensation is a base‐promoted intramolecular condensation of α,ω‐diesters to form cyclic β‐ketoesters that can be further transformed into cyclic ketone upon hydrolysis and decarboxylation.Occasionally, this reaction is also known as Dieckmann ring closure. It has been reported that this reaction is an important mechanism for synthesizing even larger cyclic ketones. The importance of this reaction has been evidenced in the preparation of complicated cyclic compounds in a series of tandem reactions. It has also been proved that this reaction occurs in the gas phase with a mechanism analogous to the solution phase condensation.
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
