Люди с инвалидностью — социальная группа, подверженная повышенному риску бедности и социальной эксклюзии, что актуализирует изучение способов их интеграции в общество. Целью данного исследования было выявить возможности осуществления социальной мобильности и повышения пространственной подвижности людьми с инвалидностью через профессиональный спорт. Информационную базу исследования составили восемь биографических интервью с профессиональными спортсменами, имеющими серьезные нарушения здоровья. В статье описывается, как начиналась карьера спортсменов с инвалидностью, что их мотивировало и на чью поддержку они опирались, каких результатов в спорте достигли к настоящему моменту и с какими сложностями столкнулись, а также как изменялись различные виды капитала и пространственная подвижность спортсменов по мере развития их спортивной карьеры. Результаты исследования свидетельствуют, что спорт высших достижений способствовал профессиональной реализации, улучшению материального положения, расширению сети социальных контактов, развитию ценных для спортивной карьеры и жизни в целом навыков и жизненных установок — т.е. накоплению экономического, социального и культурного капитала спортсменами с инвалидностью. Кроме того, спорт стал стимулом и способом повысить пространственную подвижность спортсменов, что позитивно сказалось на их возможностях социального участия. Качественные изменения в жизни спортсменов, произошедшие благодаря большому спорту, показывают, что информанты повысили свой социальный статус и осуществили восходящую социальную мобильность.
