This paper reports on characteristics of funerary rites at Frontovoye 3, which is a cemetery located one kilometer north northwest of the village of Frontovoye in the Nakhimovsky district of Sevastopol which was fully examined by a team of the Crimea salvage expedition of the Institute of Archaeology, Russian Academy of Sciences, in 2018. The area of 13,948 sq. m was excavated 328 graves dating to the end of the 1st 4th centuries and four graves of the Bronze Age, including 305 niche graves, 12 ground vaulted graves, 7 pit graves, 1 jar burial in an amphora, 1 horse grave and 2 dog graves were investigated. The cemetery is characterized by predominance of niche graves, orientation of the deceased to the southeast, presence of a special type of cremated burials and correlation between the burial chamber and the entrance pit in ground vaulted graves. The rites identified at the site have analogies in a number of sites located in the Southwest and Central Crimea however, the combination of the types of burial rite and their percentage ratio at Frontovoye is quite distinctive.
В 2018 г. In 2018 the Sevastopol team of the Crimean expedition of archaeological land testing in advance of construction development (IA RAS) excavated a new cemetery in the southwestern Crimea which was dated to the first centuries AD. The site is known as Frontovoye 3. The paper explores the technology of hand-made ceramics retrieved from this site. It examines the data on adaptive skills of the potters who produced hand-made vessels discovered at Frontovoye 3 such as selection and production of original plastic raw material, composition of clay paste and treatment of the external surface of the vessels. Differences in the clay composition of the examined vessels were used to single out two cultural elements, one of which appears to be local while the other is non-local. The nonlocal element was distinguished by presence of grog added to the clay. The study shows that people with the tradition of adding grog into the clay buried their dead in ground vaults; in the 4 century this tradition spread all across the southwestern Crimea.
The paper deals with preliminary results of settlement «The hillfort of 11 kilometer» excavations (Leninsky district of the Republic of Crimea). Three excavation trenches of 16520 square meters were investigated. The settlement was appeared in the Middle Bronze Age. The most intense period of site existence is Roman times. Most of the studied structures dates to I–II centuries AD. In addition, materials of Hellenistic times, Middle and Modern ages were met. A group of Late Roman times burials was found.
In 2020–2021 a separate team of the Institute of Archaeology excavated the entire cemetery of Kil-Dere 1 located in the northern outskirts of Sevastopol. The site was almost entirely looted. The excavations revealed 421 graves; pits with side niches (one or, less frequently, two) prevailed. Besides, simple in-ground pits with cremations in urns and burials in stone cists were discovered. This paper deals with stone cists; in total, 13 funerary constructions of this kind were examined. The cists walls were lined with worked limestone slabs, one or several slabs were used to pave the cists bottoms and to cover them. The lateral walls of these constructions are oriented N-S. The cists were constructed in the central part of the in-ground burial pits. All graves contained inhumations. The studied assemblages date to the end of the 3rd–4th centuries.
