The article analyzes specific features of the use and functioning of youth slang in the United States and Ukraine. The origin of the concept of “slang” is covered, its types, semantic and functional characteristics of slang units, identification of semantic differences between slang and other layers of narrow vocabulary, features of their categories are named and slang terms in different areas are studied. Slang – which is below the standard; these words do not use the standard language or they have their own meaning. Slang words and expressions are emotional and often used as metaphors. Slang is a word, a vocabulary that changes very quickly. If a word is found to lose its novelty, it is replaced by new slang. This is a person’s vocabulary. Slang is characterized by the fact that it is always updated. Youth slang is characterized by liveliness, flexibility and unexpected wit. Slang is a constant formation of words that uses the principle of language play. It has been studied that slang is popular among young people. Young people live slang in everyday life because they strive to be modern and stylish. Many people use slang, any other means of communication.
The article considers the main types of semantic-sigmatic and communicative-functional transformations of lexical units against the background of changes in certain parameters of discourse and analyzes the fundamental motives for changing the load of lexical units in modern space. The relevance of this work is determined by modern transformations of linguistic study of different types of discourse, which occur on the basis of the study of communication and the search for universal foundations of linguistic interaction. Language is considered as a complex communicative and cognitive phenomenon that determines the state of intercultural communication. The components that directly affect the communication process and the success of the modern language formation must be identified. The aim of this study was to analyze the semantic-sigmatic and communicative-functional components of discourse and the theory of their understanding in modern communication. The theoretical and methodological basis of the study included the works of scientists in the field of modern methods of communication. The objective method was the analysis of documents (monographs, articles, statistics, scientific papers and textbooks on the selected topic).
The article examines the problem of using the complete idioms with colors in English and Ukrainian. The article covers the definition of idioms and various approaches to their study and use by famous linguists. The authors present a classification of idioms, in particular semantic and structural. In addition, the syntactic study of constituents consisting of color idioms is considered. The researching discusses the implicit nature of color idioms in English and Ukrainian. The term "implicit meaning" is considered as the meaning that may not be obvious to speakers of foreign languages. The research work mainly analyzes common color idioms found in English and Ukrainian languages, as well as those idioms that have no semantic or structural equivalents in the compared languages. The relevance of this work lies in the fact that today's realities, the global interrelationships of nations and the cultural varieties of our planet in the 21st century, the growing needs for communication and work between countries and people of different languages and cultural traditions require the training of highly qualified teachers who are able to participate in international communication and international cooperation and the formation of a new attitude towards Ukraine in Europe and around the world. That is why today the research and use of the linguistic phenomenon associated with color idioms is considered as one of the problems that is in the center of attention of linguists all over the world.
The purpose of the study is to identify the figurative means in the formal diplomatic texts of speeches of chief delegates of the Ukrainian SSR to exert influence at the sessions of the UN General Assembly. Based on the interpretive method of speech analysis and the method of generalisation of the data obtained, an attempt was made to identify the main figurative means and expressiveness of speech, which help to achieve the effect of influence on the reader (listener). In order to identify hidden meanings, a hermeneutic approach to understanding texts was used. According to the results of the study, the most actively used linguistic means of figurativeness in the considered texts are epithets, metaphors, phraseologies. There are many more negative epithets used in the texts of speeches than positive ones, which aim to make people aware of the idea of self-preservation, to arouse emotions of anxiety, fear, vigilance. Metaphors of positive and negative evaluation are used to verbalise mental states, social states and thought processes. Most of the epithets, metaphors, idioms represented in the text are used to denote a negative evaluation, which is perceived as a deviation from the norm and is motivated by the following factors: the reluctance of people to take positive action, irresponsible attitude of some people towards others, socially unacceptable flaws and shortcomings. A logical continuation of this study is the analysis of linguistic means of figurativeness and evaluativity of other types of texts of the official style, including statements and conventions.
