Varroosis is one of the most dangerous and common diseases of honey bees (Apis mellifera Linnaeus, 1758) worldwide, caused by gamasid mites of the species Varroa destructor Anderson and Trueman, 2000. This external parasite is widespread and adapted to the climate conditions of most countries of the world, and it can infect bees at any life stage. It parasites on worker bees, male and queen bees, larvae and pupae, feeding on their hemolymph and fat bodies, causing lower survival rates and lower density of bee colonies, decreasing the bees’ life span. Here, we studied the specifics of the seasonal variation of female V. destructor mites, obtained from honey bees, by the morphological characters of mites belonging to the summer and winter generations, and their differences were established. Using the methods of multivariate statistics, we found significant differences between the summer (June–July) and winter (October–November) morphotypes of V. destructor mites. There are differences between the seasonal samples by 12 morphological characters of the parasite, namely the width of dorsal shield, width of dorsoventral shield, number of pores on sternal shield, length of tarsus and macrochaeta IV, and distances between setae of gnathosoma. Processing the seasonal samples of mites with discriminant analysis resulted in differences by 11 morphological characters including the length of dorsal shield, number of lancet setae, length and width of genitoventral shield, width of anal shield, number of setae and pores on sternal shield and distance between setae of gnathosoma. In general, the summer females are smaller and elongated compared to winter females, with larger genitoventral shield and shorter legs. The mites of summer and winter generations are adapted to different seasons: the summer mites to the reproductive period, the winter generation to overwintering on bees. The ratio of morphotypes in female V. destructor mites is observed to change during the year, from 20.2% winter morphotype in summer generation to 20.7% summer morphotype in winter mites. Studying the influence of acaricides on the distinguished morphotypes is a promising approach to improve pest control measures against varroosis of honey bees.
Beekeeping is of great economic importance due to the production from bees and the creation of opportunities for natural pollination of crops in order to increase their yield. One of the major reasons holding back the development of beekeeping is invasive diseases, among which a large proportion is varroasis. A large number of chemicals, most commonly belonging to the group of synthetic pyrethroids, have been developed and registered for combating bee varroasis. The aim of this study was to study the effectiveness of modern acaricidal preparations for varroasis of bees, depending on the active substance and method of its application. The experimental determination of acaricidal action of four domestic preparations was carried out, namely: in the form of strips – Varolom (AS – tau-fluvalinate), Flukontakt (AS – flumethrin), Varoatsyd (AS – amitraz); in the form of an emulsion in the processing of bees by smoking and small-drip irrigation – Taktamit (AS – amitraz). Striped drugs have been found to be highly effective in combating varroasis of bees. At 30 days of treatment, the efficacy of Flukontakt averaged 99.05%, Varolom – 96.46%, Varoatsyd – 95.46%. When comparing the effectiveness of Taktamit in different ways of its use, it was determined that the greatest detrimental effect on the causative agent of varroasis was the agent used in the form of smoking with the help of the smoke-gun Varomor. The efficiency of acaricidal treatment of bees reached 98.36%. When using Taktamit in the form of small-water irrigation of bee families, its efficiency was lower and was 95.00%. At the same time, in the treatment of bees, their flight activity at air temperatures above 15 °C increased significantly during the 1–24 h period by 12.75–32.74% compared with the invaded untreated families. Moreover, this indicator was significantly higher (by 11.06%) 24 h after the use of Taktamit by smoking compared to the use of this drug by small-drip irrigation. Conducted medical activities have led to increased honey productivity in research families. The amount of harvested honey received was significantly higher in those bee families where the efficiency of acaricidal treatments was highest.
Beekeeping belongs to one of the most useful and environmentally friendly traditional economic activities in many countries of the world. This industry provides the population with valuable products, in particular honey -one of the most useful foods that is characterized by therapeutic, bactericidal and dietary properties. Recently, considerable economic damage to the area causes the invasive disease varroosis, which leads to the weakening of the bee colonies, the ability of bees to honey harvest and pollination, sometimes -to their death. The aim of the work was to study the effect of varroosic causative Varroa destructor agent on the wintering of bee colonies. The experimental determination of the degree of life affected bee colonies after wintering varroosic agent for various extensiveness of invasion -weaker (5.30 ± 0.79%), average (15.10 ± 0.75%), severe (32.30 ± 2.42%) The main indicators hardiness of bee colonies in the presence of the parasite were -pidmoru weight, the number of ticks in pidmori, the quantity of food in the hive at different periods of hibernation, the percentage of deaths of bee colonies. It has been established that the varroosis negatively affects the course of wintering of bees. Moreover, the quantitative indicators of winter resistance of families depended on the extensiveness of the invasion. At a low intensity of the invasion, the weight of the dormancy of bees after wintering on average was 59.80 ± 3.34 g, which is 1.2 times (P < 0.01) more compared to healthy families. At the same time, 2.0 mice were detected in the dungeon. With an increase in the secretion of bees, the number of dungeons and the number of detected parasites increased significantly. The average length of the invasion showed that the weight of the dormancy of bees was 5.3 times higher (P < 0.001) compared with healthy families, and the number of ticks found in dampness was 66.4. Due to the high intensity of the invasion, the weight of the bee dormancy was 1369.10 ± 49.72 g, which is 28.4 times (P < 0.001) more compared to healthy families. The number of detected ticks at such an extensiveness of the invasion amounted to 2,818.3. It has been determined that with the increase of secretion in the process of wintering, bees consumed more food, and this negatively affected their winter resistance. At the same time, due to the strong extensiveness of the invasion, the death of beeeaters after wintering was 80%.
Analysis of the cellular composition of hemolymph is of great importance for assessing the physiological state of the bees. This is due to the fact that the composition of hemocytes of the hemolymph is variable, which depends on the age, season of the year, as well as in various diseases and the impact of adverse environmental factors. Studies of domestic scientists have shown that varroosis of bees significantly affects the hemolymph indices of honeybees. A hemolymph like the blood of animals shows not only the physiological, but also the pathological changes in the body of the bees. So scientific and practical interest is the study of the effect of varooza invasion on the body of honey bees, taking into account their age. In this connection, the purpose of the study was to determine the effect of the Varroa destructor mite on the composition of hemolymph of infested bees. The studies were being conducted during 2018 in the conditions of a private apiary in the Grebenkovsky district of the Poltava region. The object of the study were the bees of the same age, which were obtained by incubating of the printed brood. 8 groups were formed: 4 research groups which bees affected by the Varroa destructor mite of different ages (one, four, eight and twelve days of age) and 4 control groups which bees were free from a mite of similar age. From each group were taken 15 hemolymph samples (120 samples in total). According to the results of the conducted research, it has been established that the Varroa destructor mites significantly affect the physiological state of the infested bees, namely, the indicators of the hemolymph formed elements. Invasion is revealed by a decrease in progenitor cells (proleukocyte and growth of phagocytes), which indicate the activation of the immune system of bees, as well as the toxic effect of invasion of pathogens. It has been proven that the age of bees has a significant effect on the bees' immune response to varroosis, as evidenced by the dynamics of secretory cells (the spherulites in bees hemolymph). It was found that the age ratio of hemolymph in bees over varroosis significantly increases (up to 28.6%), which indicates the depletion of the insects’ body. Prospects for further research is to determine the effect of Varroa destructor on the state of the fat body and the lifespan of honeybees.
