The 2019 coronavirus disease COVID-19, the disease caused by the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 SARS-CoV-2, has had a devastating impact on public health and significant economic losses. According to accumulated clinical data, COVID-19 is characterized by a systemic inflammatory response with an excessive release of cytokines, including pro-inflammatory interleukin-6, which is commonly referred to as a cytokine storm. Cytokine storm is a critical life-threatening condition that requires hospitalization in the intensive care unit and has a fairly high mortality rate. The article presents current data on the cytokine storm, as well as modern approaches to the appointment of targeted and other types of therapy in patients with COVID-19. The prevalence and mortality of COVID-19 infections are rising rapidly, while treatment options remain variable.
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
