Transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) occupies a leading position among noninvasive neurophysiological methods used for evaluating the balance of processes of cortical inhibition and excitation. The aim of the present work was to assess motor cortical excitability in symptomatic partial epilepsy using TMS in relation to the effects of antiepileptic treatment. A total of 31 patients were studied. A decrease in the motor response threshold was seen in a group consisting of untreated patients, with changes in cortical excitability during seizures. Treated patients showed no difference as compared with healthy subjects. The shorter the interval between a seizure and TMS, the smaller the evoked motor response threshold. The low threshold seen in patients with symptomatic partial epilepsy showed a significant correlation with clinical signs of neuromuscular excitability. The data obtained here provide evidence of changes in the functional state of the cortex and, thus, the motor response threshold, in patients with epilepsy.
Autonomic dysfunction syndrome (ADS) includes the somatic (autonomic) function disorders of various origin and manifestations caused by their neurogenic regulation disorder. When establishing the diagnosis of ADS, the doctor most often implies psychovegetative syndrome (PVS), which is discussed in this article. Despite the fact that the ADS is not an independent nosological unit, most doctors use this term to provide the syndromic description of psychogenic polysystemic autonomic disorders. The ADS is mostly caused by mental disturbances of anxiety or anxiety-depressive nature within the neurotic, stress-related disorders, less often by an endogenous disease. The article describes the features of the ADS clinic picture, and focuses on hyperventilation syndrome. It discusses a clinical case of a patient with ADS (with florid hyperventilation syndrome), who was treated ineffectively with antidepressants. The authors also describe options for treating patients with ADS using a neuroleptic agent ziprasidone.
Article is dedicated to the problem of headache in children. This pathology is being found more frequently in pediatric and children's neurologic practice. The authors examine headache pathogenesis from the position of magnesium deficiency. Analysis of results of the modern studies on magnesium deficiency and its correction in patients with headache indicates that magnesium metabolism may play an important role both in pathogenesis of different headache types and in its treatment and prevention.
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
