Introduction. Impairment of balance and locomotion is a common manifestation of neurodegenerative disorders, that impairs patients’ quality of life, and can be a cause of mortality (e.g., due to severe head trauma, or hip fracture). Purpose. To assess the issues of utilization of videomotion analysis and stabilometry with force platform in the study of voluntary postural sway. Materials and methods. We studied 4 patients with Parkinson’s disease, and 2 healthy volunteers. The subjects performed voluntary postural sway tasks under the guidance of videomotion analysis with visual feedback, and concurrently center of pressure position was measured using the force platform. Results. The subjects, who better performed the task, had less power of trunk oscillations in frequency range from 0.25 to 1.0 Hz, compared to oscillations of the center of pressure, that reflect an effective and anticipatory way of muscle contractions, that direct the body sway according to the given pattern. Conclusion. Therefore, videomotion analysis and stabilometry with force platform can assess connected, but having different physical meaning, parameters of balance and voluntary postural sway; their concurrent utilization helps to achieve more universal picture of the phenomena.
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
