During the Palaeozoic–Early Cenozoic, Georgia and adjacent areas represented part of the Tethys ocean and its northern margin. At the pre-collisional stage, systems of island-arc and back-arc structures can be distinguished along the southern margin of the East European continent and the oceanic basin. Several events of supra-subduction magmatic activity and obduction of oceanic crust fragments took place during the Palaeozoic, Mesozoic and Early Cenozoic. New results obtained through the International Research Group and DARIUS projects can be used to build a base for more precise tectonic zoning of the southern Caucasus and adjacent areas, the correlation of these zones and better substantiated Mesozoic–Early Cenozoic palaeotectonic reconstructions of the region. The final closure of the oceanic and back-arc basins and the formation of the present day structure of Georgia and adjacent countries occurred in the Late Cenozoic. The collision between the Africa–Arabian and Eurasian plates caused inversion of the relief and, in place of the intra-arc and back-arc basins, the mountain fold–thrust belts of the Great and Lesser Caucasus were formed with the Transcaucasian intermontane depression between them. The marine basins of Georgia were replaced by euxinic basins and, later, by continental basins with subaerial sedimentation and volcanism.
GagraJava zone represents the southernmost tectonic unit of the Greater Caucasus and located along the boundary with the Black SeaTranscaucasian microcontinent (microplate). In geological building of the discussed area of the GagraJava zone are participating sandyclayey deposits of lower, middle and upper Jurassic, volcanic rocks of the middle Jurassic, and carbonates of Cretaceous and Paleogene, with 6 km of total thickness. During the detailed regional works, in the studied area, along the intersection of gorges of rivers Tskhenistskali and Rioni, the geologicalstructural sections of 2030 km length accordingly were composed. The common characteristic of the folding developed in the Tskhenistskali section is the southwestern strike (230260o) of the structures. In the Rioni section mainly developed the structures with northwestern strike (285315o) of axis. Folded structure of the Mesozoic deposits of the Tskhenistskali section differs by multiordinal and different dislocation of formations. In the limits of geologicalstructural profile there were defined folded areas bounded by steep faults and deformed differently and sometimes difficult to identify as the same structure. The reason of such collage of different dislocations is the vertical disharmony of the folding and multiple overprint of tangentional compression of different orientation. Folding of MiddleUpper Jurassic and Cretaceous deposits of the Rioni section is relatively simple. It is forming gentle flexure like up to 30 km wide fold of the first order. According the level of the folds developed in the area, gentle limb of the flexure in the southern part is complicated by bends dipping with angle 1530o, the steeper limb of the fold is subvertical (7585o). Folding of the GagraJava tectonic zone was formed at the early, middle Alpine stage of the evolution of the Greater Caucasus during the manifestation of Bathonian (Adigean) and active at the boundary of EoceneOligocene (Pyrenean) phases of tectogenese. The folding took place in the conditions of the northeastern tangential compression of the region, stipulated by motion and pining of the Black SeaTranscaucasia nmicrocontinent to the GagraJava zone. Late Alpine newest stage (late MioceneAnthropogene) took place in the conditions of submeridional horizontal pressure on the active marginal GagraJava zone. These movement took place during newest and Quaternary phases of folding in conditions of collision of the Black SeaTranscaucasian microcontinent and the Greater Caucasus. Multiple tangential compression of different direction promotes processes of formation of nonuniform folded structure of different age in GagraJava zone, which is continued today
In the article is discussed the mechanism of folding of the Greater Caucasus, which is still controversial. At present, the conditions for the formation of the main (pre-late orogenic) structure of the region, by most researchers in the result of analysis of the field data are considered as mobile underthrusting and thrusting mechanisms of folding. However, to resolve this issue, it is necessary to conduct experimental studies of the capabilities of these mechanisms to ensure their reliability. Aim. Experimental study of the underthrusting and thrusting mechanisms of the formation of a folded structure, to establish the similarity of the folding obtained by modeling and structure of the Greater Caucasus. The research methodology consisted in carrying out experimental modeling of fold genesis processes. Models imitating sedimentary strata of the Greater Caucasus consisted of packs of alternating horizontal layers of petrolatum, which were placed between two wooden blocks. When modeling the underthrusting mechanism of folding, the pressing bar had a wedge shape, which simulated gently sloping shear faults. In experiments with the thrusting mechanism of deformation, the active bars had steep edges, which produced the subvertical inclination of the edge fault. The original models were placed in a special device, where they were subjected to one-sided tangential deformation. Results. During modeling the underthrusting mechanism of folding in the process of oblique compression in the layered strata, overthrust (underthrust) displacements were observed along the gently-dipping surface of the shear fault of the almost undeformed layers. Behind them, under horizontal compression in the layered pack, subvertical highly compressed small scaled folding has developed. In the process of modeling the thrusting mechanism of folding genesis, bars with steep edges were pressed against the layered stack. During the deformation of the model parallel to the bedding, a zonal subvertical tightly compressed folding appeared near the pressing block. Its strength decreased towards the passive bar, where it passed into a monoclinal structure. In the course of modeling in underthrusting experiments, zonal folding was formed, the intensity of which increased with distance from the place of pressure. This folding morphology is not typical for the region, which contradicts the hypothesis of the underthrusting mechanism of its folding. In thrust experiments, an asymmetric zonal structure was also formed, but its tension decreased in the opposite direction. A similar zoning of the folded structure is developed within the Greater Caucasus, which confirms the possibility of its formation by the thrust mechanism of tectogenesis
As a result of the detailed geological-structural researches within the Southern Slope of the Greater Caucasus there have been established the development of the interference folding. It builds up southern marginal part of separate areas of North-West, Central and South-East Caucasus. The 85 km long and 25km wide stripe of development of the interference folding in general has sublatitudional directions in distinction from NW orientation of main linear folding of the region. All areas are characterized with development of uniform intersecting folded structures of nearly identic morphology. They are represented by linear folds as well as by brachiform folds and nonlinear rounded structures. Individual folds in the plane have NW, sublatitudional and submeridional orientation. Its built up with multi-order structures of folds of different shape and size, from first hundred meters to several kilometers and first tenth kilometers. In short linear lens-shaped folds bending of fold hinges in plane and section are observed. Sometimes brenching of the structures, festoon morphology of their pericline and wedge-shaped forms are recorded. Domes, pit-like (cuppy) and brachiform structures in plane have rounded, oval, drop-shaped, four-sided (quadrangular), horseshoe shapes. It occurred due to the transformation of the primary linear plicative structures, formed at the Early-Middle Alpine and Early Orogenic stages during the NW tangential compression of the Greater Caucasus. At the Late Orogenic collision stage, the orientation of the previous stress in this region was replaced by the submeridional stress. It caused the northward movement of certain block-schols of the Black Sea-Transcaucasian micro-continent and its intrusion into the folded system of the Greater Caucasus. Such deformation caused the oblique superposition of submeridional strains and the repeated compression of the structures on the local areas of development of the previous folding of submeridional strains. In the result of combination of these processes of different orientation typical interferential structure was formed in the southern edge zone of the Greater Caucasus. Thus, mechanism of the formation of interferential folding represents manifestation of external unilateral, but diversified (in plane) tangential deformations occurred during the Alpine cycle in the Greater Caucasus
As a result of many years of detailed study, regularities of the internal structure of the Alpine folded structure of the NorthWest Caucasus are revealed. It has been established that one of the characteristic features of this region is the lateral zonality of its folded structure in cross section, which manifests a successive change of intense folding to moderate and then to weak from the southwest to the northeast. This indicates a decrease in deformation strain in the indicated direction during the formation of folding in the NorthWest Caucasus. Widespread development of interference folded structures arising as a result of superimposed deformations of different orientation and age was revealed within the southern slope of the NorthWest Caucasus. It was found that the interference folding in the region is formed in the process of repeated deformation of the linear folding of the northwestern strike formed earlier by the tangential longitudinal compression. It was determined that interference folding reflects a change of the plan of deformation of the NorthWest Caucasus from the northeast to submeridional during the formation of the folded system. The kinematic features of folding formation of various morphology developed within the studied region are considered. The reason of the variety of folded forms observed in the modern structure of the NorthWest Caucasus is revealed. Wide distribution of faults with different orientation, age and kinematics in the region is outlined. The conditions of formation of the folded structure of the NorthWest Caucasus are reconstructed on the basis of a detailed analyses. Its clarified that two stages of tectogenesis were distinguished in the forming of folded structure of NW Caucasus. At the first stage of deformation (JurassicMiddle Miocene) the leading role had the tangential forces SW direction arised as a result of movement and pressing of the Black SeaTranscaucasian Microcontinent to the NW Caucasus. Therefore, such a deformation can be considered as a manifestation of microplate tectonics. During the second stage (Late MioceneAnthropogen) of tectogenesis at the conditions of submeridional horizontal compression, traveling to the north individual blocks of the microcontinent intruded into the folded system of the region, causing its secondary dislocation. It is shown that the activities of schole tectonics led to the transformation of primary folding in the southern active region of the NorthWest Caucasus. The recent processes of deformation with the formation of new superimposed structures is continues in the region at present.
