На даний час не всі ІТ-компанії, особливо невеликі, приділяють достатньо уваги управлінню ІТ-проектами в своїй діяльності. В результаті збитки ІТ-індустрії, штрафи за провалені проекти тощо. Адже, для досягнення стабільних та якісних результатів у будь- якій сфері бізнесу важливо вміло поєднувати та координувати весь процес. При цьому потрібно пам’ятати, що кожен проект є унікальним. Саме від уміння реалізувати ІТ-проект в компанії залежить успіх всього підприємства. В зв'язку з цим, управління проектами стає актуальним і важливим питанням для менеджерів будь-якої ланки на підприємстві. Таким чином, новою тенденцією в регулюванні роботи ІТ-компаній сьогодні є проектний менеджмент, який допомагає швидко і ефективно досягати поставлених цілей. З огляду на це, необхідним є обґрунтування застосування мережевого планування як одного з методів управління ІТ-проектами. Були розглянуті останні публікації у відкритому доступі, що стосуються мережевого планування в управлінні ІТ-проектами. Сьогодні на ринку інформаційних технологій існує велика кількість комп’ютерних програм, як вітчизняних, так і зарубіжних, які допомагають ефективніше управляти проектами. Кожна з яких має свої переваги і недоліки. Основна мета таких програм – зробити процес управління проектом простішим, швидшим і зрозумілішим для всіх членів команди. Поряд з цим, ряд питань науково-методичного характеру, пов’язаних з питанням мережевого планування за допомогою табличного процесора MS Excel не отримали дотепер широкого застосування. Враховуючи вищесказане, головною метою даної статті є використання потужного інструменту для візуалізації та аналізу даних – табличного процесора MS Excel при вивченні питання мережевого планування в управлінні ІТ-проектами, зокрема в розрахунку часових параметрів подій та визначенні резервів часу виконання робіт.
