Рассмотрен квадратичный эффект Саньяка (КЭС), регистрируемый наблюдателем, находящимся в лабораторной (инерциальной) системе отсчета (ИНС), относительно которой движется интерферометр Майкельсона (ИМ). Квадратичный эффект Саньяка ранее был вычислен во вращающейся системе отсчета (ВСО), где он возникает как следствие влияния гравитационного потенциала силы Кориолиса в ВСО и приводит к возникновению разности фаз во вращающемся ИМ. Показано, что величины КЭС, вычисленные в ИНС и ВСО, практически совпадают. Показано также, что в различных случаях вычисление КЭС наиболее рационально проводить или в ИНС, или во ВСО. Сделаны численные оценки, которые показывают, что проведение экспериментов по регистрации КЭС является вполне реальным. Введено понятие эффективных длин плеч движущегося относительно неподвижного наблюдателя ИМ --- длины путей света при его распространении в прямом и обратном направлениях. Эти эффективные длины плеч не совпадают ни с собственной длиной плеча ИМ L, ни с его релятивистской длиной L/γ. Введение этого понятия связано с тем, что зеркала движущегося ИМ перемещаются в процессе распространения света. При некоторых расчетах целесообразно учитывать эффективные длины плеч ИМ.
