Факоемульсифікація катаракти (ФЕК) є пріоритетним методом хірургічного лікування патології кришталика. Це є стандартом сучасної хірургії. Серед переваг для вибору цього методу - мала інвазивність, безшовний характер процесу та скорочений час тривалості операції. За рахунок цього спостерігається й направленість на зниження ризику виникнення ускладнень у післяопераційному періоді. Але навіть при досягненнях сучасної офтальмохірургії виникнення ускладнень може відбутися й при застосуванні передового методу оперативного втручання. Набряк рогівки в післяопераційному періоді спостерігається приблизного у 17-21 % від усіх прооперованих пацієнтів. На ризик її виникнення безпосередньо впливають безліч факторів, але щільність ядра кришталика займає провідне місце, бо пацієнти у багатьох випадках звертаються вже на пізніх стаціях процесу з різних причин. Несприятливі умови та нестабільна ситуація в країні для проведення оперативного втручання збільшила кратність таких випадків.
