Analysis of the historical faunistic explorations in Russia demonstrates the gradual improvement of knowledge during the 20th century for this country with variable borders. Recent estimations of the Trichoptera biodiversity in the Russian Federation show the presence of 643 species in 148 genera of 28 families within its limits. The largest family, Limnephilidae, comprises 159 species, followed by Leptoceridae (92 spp.), Hydroptilidae (56), Rhyacophilidae (49), Apataniidae (41), Polycentropodidae (35), Hydropsychidae (33), Phryganeidae (28), Glossosomatidae (23), Psychomyiidae (22), Philopotamidae (19), Lepidostomatidae (18), Goeridae (12), Brachycentridae (9), Molannidae (8), Beraeidae (6), Sericostomatidae (5), Stenopsychidae (5), Arctopsychidae (4), Ptilocolepidae (4), Ecnomidae (3), Uenoidae (3), Calamoceratidae (3), and Odontoceridae (2), with Hydrobiosidae, Dipseudopsidae, Phryganopsychidae, and Thremmatidae each with a single species. The fauna of Far East Russia is the richest with 392 species, whereas European Russia in inhabited by 225 spp., the Caucasus 155, and Siberia 239. Species distribution patterns are not known in detail even in European Russia. New additions to the fauna are expected from the Far East and other regions.

Typological considerations both of phonemic structure and of phonemic change call for a restatement of the system of primitive Indo-European stops. The two series so far taken to be voiced and voiceless are reinterpreted as glottalized and voiceless aspirate, respectively. The languages believed to have undergone major consonant shifts (Germanic, Armenian, Hittite) turn out to be very conservative as far as their consonant systems are concerned.

In the caddisfly Molanna angustata, females produce a sex pheromone in glands with openings on the fifth sternite. Gas chromatographic analyses of pheromone gland extracts with electroantennographic detection revealed four major compounds that stimulated male antennae. These compounds were identified by means of gas chromatography-mass spectrometry and enantioselective gas chromatography as heptan-2-one, (S)-heptan-2-ol, nonan-2-one, and (S)-nonan-2-ol in the approximate ratio of 1:1:4:10, respectively. Field tests showed that the mixture of the two alcohols was attractive to males whereas addition of the corresponding ketones reduced trap catches. The sex pheromone of M. angustata, a species in the family Molannidae within the suborder Integripalpia, is similar to the pheromones or pheromone-like compounds previously reported from six other trichopteran families, including members of the basal suborder Annulipalpia. This suggests that minimal evolutionary change of the pheromone chemistry has taken place within the leptoceroid branch of integripalpian Trichoptera compared to the ancestral character state.
