Complex analysis of Paleolithic sculptures with modern methods of archeology, microscopy, art history, ethnography allows us to construct new grounds for reading semantic texts and codes of Paleolithic Siberian population’s culture. The collection of the ornithomorphic sculpture of the Upper Paleolithic culture Malta of Siberia has 20 images of birds that are made on billets from the mammoth tusk. The «classical» cultural layer is dated up 23 to 19 thousand years ago. The article presents the results of morphological, technological and stylistic analyzes of ornithomorphic sculptures of the Malta and there are versions of the interpretation of the results obtained. Semiotic analysis allows us to propose options for reading the bird's image as a specific cultural sign, symbol of ideas or events that are fixed through a cultural tradition in mobile sculptural form.
The paper provides an overview of the Siberian Paleolithic collection in the most complete and systemized form (Tolbaga, Mal’ta, Ust’-Kova, Buret’, Yanskaya sites, etc.). Siberian figurines are noted for realism, characteristic details, a limited number of species, consistent technological and decoration methods. Approaches to classification of items have been proposed on the basis of a set of methods. Stylistical analysis serves to identify two traditions: serial items and individual items. In terms of technology and typology, there is a consistent correlation between a piece of material to be worked (flakes, bars, rods) and a finished item. Pieces of material for making figurines and half-finished and finished items are singled out. Decoration of the items (imitation of fur, scales and feathers) is typical for ‘individual’ items and is identified for cultural traditions of tusk ornamentation in Siberia. Most described items of Siberian portable art have been entered in the information system with complete attribution, details and 3D models.
An important aspect in archaeological science is the process of detailed research and documentation of unique art objects using new methodological developments, technologies and techniques. The use of modern digital technologies and microscopy are the basis for revealing the details of objects and their exact fixation. The team of authors discovered a new image on the horn pendant from the burial of a teenager while working with artifacts from the burial complexes of the Hunn burial ground Cheremukhovaya pad in Transbaikalia. The article presents the results of a microscopic and stylistic analysis of the zoomorphic image, attribution of the image to a biological species, its cultural affiliation. The conclusions are based on the identification of taxonomic and artistic-stylistic features, as well as versions of the possible semantic meaning are proposed here.
