The article presents a comprehensive study of figurative means containing the names of body parts. The relevance of the work is determined by the increased attention of scientists to the problem of linguistic imagery as a semantic category, insufficient knowledge of the features of figurative paradigmatic series, including from the point of view of language levels at which imagery is created. The scientific novelty of the work lies in the fact that for the first time the features of the functioning of figurative means with the names of body parts are investigated, the levels of language at which the appearance of an image is possible are established, the ratio of somatisms and components of the comparative triad is determined, the traditional large and small figurative agentive-paradigmatic series with somatic referents are investigated, the continuity of images is traced. The research material consisted of the text of the Bible, the works of Shakespeare, as well as artistic prose and poetic works of English and American writers of the 19th and 20th centuries. The paper proves that the most common in figurative constructions are the somatisms eye and heart. Since most images are based on these somatisms, it is advisable to trace the semantic structure of figurative means by studying their agentive-paradigmatic relations.
