Jhrh. v. Chr. schon dies Mittel mit seiner " antiarthritischen " und " abführenden " Wirkung bekannt gewesen sein (159,226,244). Durch seine drastisch abführenden Nebenwirkungen wurde Colchicum in den folgenden Jahrhunderten sehr wenig in der klinischen Medizin angewandt und erst im 13. Jhrh. durch byzantinische Ärzte und im 16. Jhrh. durch den berühmten französischen Chirurgen PARE wieder in die Medizin eingeführt und ist bis heute beim Gichtanfall das Mittel der Wahl geblieben (159,226).Schon den Ärzten aus früheren Jahrhunderten war bekannt, daß die Gicht in Zeiten der Not selten, in Zeiten des Wohlstandes häufig ist und stets die Reichen häufiger befallen wurden. Es wird zweifelhaft bleiben, ob alle jene historischen Größen, denen wir, beginnend mit Alexander dem Großen, eine Gicht zuschreiben, wirklich daran gelitten haben.
