Η κακοποίηση αποτελεί ένα από τα πιο σημαντικά κοινωνικά φαινόμενα διότι λαμβάνει χώρα πίσω από κλειστές πόρτες και αποτελεί ένα από τα καλά κρυμμένα μυστικά της οικογένειας. Επιπροσθέτως, η ανίχνευση περιστατικών παιδικής κακοποίησης συναντά πολλά εμπόδια και είναι δύσκολο να επιτευχθεί. Το σχολείο, ωστόσο, θεωρείται σημαντικός πόλος διαθέσιμων πληροφοριών καθώς τα παιδιά περνούν πολύ χρόνο σε αυτό και εκδηλώνουν ποικίλες συμπεριφορές ενδεικτικές των τραυματικών εμπειριών που βιώνουν. Στόχος της παρούσας μελέτης ήταν να εξετάσει τις συναισθηματικές, κοινωνικές και γνωστικές δυσκολίες που εκδηλώνουν τα κακοποιημένα παιδιά στο χώρο του σχολείου.Ειδικότερα, μελετήθηκαν 38 σωματικά κακοποιημένα παιδιά που παραμένουν στην οικογένεια τους, 36 σωματικά κακοποιημένα παιδιά που φιλοξενούνται σε ιδρύματα και 37 μη κακοποιημένα παιδιά με στόχο να εξεταστούν πιθανές διαφορές μεταξύ τους ως προς το άγχος και την κατάθλιψη που βιώνουν, πιθανές κοινωνικές δυσκολίες που αντιμετωπίζουν και πιθανά ελλείμματα στις λειτουργίες της προσοχής και της μνήμης. Επιπλέον, μελετήθηκε η εκτίμηση των εκπαιδευτικών σχετικά με τις δυσκολίες που εντόπιζαν στα κακοποιημένα και μη κακοποιημένα παιδιά. Οι ηλικίες των παιδιών κυμαίνονταν από 6 έως 12 ετών.Σύμφωνα με τα συμπεράσματα της μελέτης τα κακοποιημένα παιδιά εκδηλώνουν υψηλότερο άγχος και κατάθλιψη και αντιμετωπίζουν γνωστικά ελλείμματα τα οποία επηρεάζουν αρνητικά τη σχολική τους επίδοση. Επιπλέον, τα παιδιά που έχουν κακοποιηθεί εκδηλώνουν περισσότερο επιθετικές συμπεριφορές, χωρίς ωστόσο τα ίδια να αντιλαμβάνονται τα κοινωνικά ελλείμματα που παρουσιάζουν. Αναφορικά με τα παιδιά που έχουν απομακρυνθεί από το κακοποιητικό περιβάλλον και φιλοξενούνται σε ιδρύματα φαίνεται ότι οι δυσκολίες που αντιμετωπίζουν είναι ακόμη πιο έντονες και η εικόνα δυσχερής.Η μελέτη καταλήγει ότι τα παιδιά που κακοποιούνται σωματικά από το οικογενειακό τους περιβάλλον εκδηλώνουν μια σειρά από ενδεικτικές συμπεριφορές στο χώρο του σχολείου, οι οποίες εάν αξιοποιηθούν σωστά μπορεί να φανούν εξαιρετικά χρήσιμες στην ανίχνευση των περιστατικών παιδικής κακοποίησης. Επιπλέον, περιγράφονται μια σειρά από στοιχεία τα οποία δύνανται να χρησιμοποιηθούν για τον έγκυρο σχεδιασμό προγραμμάτων παρέμβασης και υποστήριξης των κακοποιημένων παιδιών είτε παραμένουν στην οικογένεια, είτε έχουν απομακρυνθεί από αυτήν.
