Η υπέρυθρη θερμογραφία είναι μία μη καταστρεπτική τεχνική η οποία μπορεί να χρησιμοποιηθεί επιτυχώς σε ένα εύρος εφαρμογών και συγκεκριμένα στον έλεγχο δομικών υλικών σε κατασκευές. Στην παρούσα εργασία, χρησιμοποιήθηκε υπέρυθρη θερμογραφία διπλών περιοχών μήκους κύματος (3-5.4μm και 8-12μm) για τον έλεγχο ιστορικών- παραδοσιακών και σύγχρονων υλικών-κατασκευών, με παθητική ή ενεργητική προσέγγιση, ανάλογα με την περίπτωση της εφαρμογής. Η τεχνική της υπέρυθρης θερμογραφίας προτυποποιήθηκε και εφαρμόστηκε στον έλεγχο παραδοσιακών-ιστορικών υλικών και κατασκευών για ερευνητικούς λόγους όπως: προσδιορισμό των συντελεστών εκπομπής, αποτίμηση της κατανομής της υγρασίας σε πορώδη μέσα και έλεγχο των επεμβάσεων συντήρησης σχετικά με επεμβάσεις στερέωσης σε πορώδεις λίθους, έλεγχο συμπεριφοράς ιστορικών κονιαμάτων και κονιαμάτων αποκατάστασης, αποτίμηση επεμβάσεων καθαρισμού σε ιστορικά κτίρια, καθώς και εξέταση ψηφιδωτών και αποτίμηση των επεμβάσεων συντήρησης τους. Στην περίπτωση των σύγχρονων υλικών-κατασκευών, εφαρμόστηκαν και οι δύο θερμογραφικές προσεγγίσεις ελέγχου στην ανίχνευση-αναγνώριση ατελειών σε κατασκευές, οι οποίες ατέλειες προκύπτουν είτε λόγω κοπώσεως ή γήρανσης των υλικών ή ακόμα και σε κακοτεχνίες. Παρουσιάζονται τα αποτελέσματα διαγνωστικών μελετών, στο εργαστήριο και επί τόπου, σε παραδοσιακά υλικά, ιστορικά κτίρια και μνημεία, καθώς και σε οδοστρώματα αεροδρομίου και υλικά αεροσκαφών. Αναλύονται ακόμα τα πλεονεκτήματα και οι περιορισμοί των θερμογραφικών τεχνικών κατά την εφαρμογή τους. Τέλος, τα αποτελέσματα της ερευνητικής αυτής μελέτης επιβεβαιώνουν ότι η υπέρυθρη θερμογραφία στον ελλαδικό χώρο πρέπει να θεωρηθεί ως μία υψηλού τεχνολογικά επιπέδου μη καταστρεπτική τεχνική αποτίμησης δομικών υλικών σε κατασκευές.
