Σε δέκα ασθενείς με ενδομητρίωση, ηλικίας 21-37 ετών, χορηγήθηκε danazol σε δόση 200 mg κάθε οκτώ ώρες για έξι μήνες. Η δοκιμασία κιτρικής κλομιφένης (50 mg κάθε δώδεκα ώρες για πέντε ημέρες, από την πέμπτη έως και την ένατη ημέρα του κύκλου) έγινε τρεις φορές, πριν τη χορήγηση danazol, κατά το τελευταίο δεκαπενθήμερο της εξάμηνης θεραπείας με το φάρμακο και τρεις μήνες ύστερα από τη διακοπή του. Η δοκιμασία αυτή έγινε μία φορά και σε δέκα γυναίκες, ηλικίας 21-36 ετών, χωρίς πυελική παθολογία. Αιμοληψίες (τρεις, μία κάθε 60 λεπτά) για προσδιορισμό της SHBG έγιναν σε όλες τις γυναίκες πριν από τη χορήγηση κιτρικής κλομιφένης και δώδεκα ώρες ύστερα από τη διακοπή της. Βρέθηκε ότι: 1. Οι τιμές της SHBG ήταν υψηλότερες στις ασθενείς με ενδομητρίωση από ότι στις μάρτυρες (p<0,01). 2. Το danazol οδήγησε σε σημαντική ελάττωση των επιπέδων της SHBG (p<0,001). 3. Δεν διαπιστώθηκε συσχέτιση ανάμεσα στις τιμές της SHBG πριν και ύστερα από τη χορήγηση danazol. 4. Τα επίπεδα της SHBG τρεις μήνες ύστερα από τη διακοπή του danazol ήταν σημαντικά χαμηλότερα από εκείνα πριν τη χορήγηση του φαρμάκου (p<0,05), ενώ δεν διέφεραν από εκείνα των μαρτύρων. 5. Η κιτρική κλομιφένη προκάλεσε αύξηση των επιπέδων της SHBG και στις μάρτυρες και στις ασθενείς με ενδομητρίωση, η οποία όμως ήταν σημαντική μόνο στην ομάδα των μαρτύρων (p<0,01). 6. Υπήρχε θετική συσχέτιση, στατιστικά σημαντική, ανάμεσα στις τιμές της SHBG πριν και ύστερα από τη χορήγηση κιτρικής κλομιφένης και στις μάρτυρες (p<0,001) και στις ασθενείς με ενδομητρίωση πριν (p<0,01) και κατά τη διάρκεια της θεραπείας με danazol (p<0,001). Τα αποτελέσματα μας δείχνουν ότι οι διαταραχές της παραγωγής της SHBG θα μπορούσαν ενδεχομένως να συμπεριληφθούν στους πιθανούς παθογενετικούς μηχανισμούς της υπογονιμότητας που παρατηρείται στην ενδομητρίωση.
