Σκοπός της διατριβής αυτής είναι η μελέτη και η παρουσίαση των πρωτοβυζαντινών αμφορέων από την κάτω πόλη της Έδεσσας. Κατά την πρωτοβυζαντινή περίοδο, η πόλη της Έδεσσας, είναι μία ακμάζουσα πόλη στην οποία καταφθάνουν προϊόντα από όλα σχεδόν τα γνωστά κέντρα παραγωγής της Μεσογείου. Οι εμπορικές σχέσεις της πόλης αποτυπώνονται στους διαφορετικούς τύπους των υστερορωμαϊκών/πρωτοβυζαντινών αμφορέων οι οποίοι προέρχονται από τον ευρύτερο μεσογειακό χώρο, κυρίως όμως από το ανατολικό τμήμα της βυζαντινής αυτοκρατορίας. Η κομβική γεωγραφική θέση της πόλης, ως διαμετακομιστικού κέντρου της Εγνατίας οδού και ένας από τους σημαντικούς σταθμούς- πέρασμα συνέβαλλαν αναμφίβολα στην κοινωνικοοικονομική εξέλιξη και στις εμπορικές διασυνδέσεις της Έδεσσας. Επίσης το μεγάλο ποσοστό αμφορέων LRA2 καθώς και άλλων υστερορωμαϊκών τύπων όπως LRA1 σε συνδυασμό από επιμέρους αρχαιολογικά ευρήματα επιβεβαιώνουν και την παρουσία στρατιωτικών σωμάτων στη πόλη. Η μεγάλη ποικιλία πηλών στους LRA2 φαίνεται ότι συνδέεται με μία ευρύτερη και διευρυμένη γεωγραφική ζώνη του Αιγαιακού χώρου, που κατά την πρωτοβυζαντινή περίοδο αποτέλεσαν κέντρα παραγωγής των συγκεκριμένων αμφορέων. Τέλος η επιβεβαιωμένη επανάχρηση των υστερορωμαϊκών/πρωτοβυζαντινών αμφορέων LRA1, LRA4, Samian cistern type και «σπαθεία» συνδέθηκε άρρηκτα με τους εγχυτρισμούς βρεφών οι οποίοι έλαβαν χώρα στις τελευταίες φάσεις κατοίκησης της κάτω πόλης της Έδεσσας. Η πόλη δεν παύει να είναι ενεργή και δραστήρια καθ’όλη την πρωτοβυζαντινή περίοδο μέχρι την οριστική εγκατάλειψή της, στις αρχές του 7ου αιώνα, από τους κατοίκους της που πλέον έγινε αναπόφευκτη.
