Κατά τη διάρκεια αυτής της διατριβής, αναπτύχθηκε μια ιδιαίτερα ευαίσθητη και επιλεκτική μέθοδος για την ανάλυση των πολυχλωριωμένων διφαινυλίων (PCBs), η οποία βασίστηκε στην χρήση της αέριας χρωματογραφίας-διπλής φασματογραφίας μάζας. Η ατμοσφαιρική συγκέντρωση των PCBs, η οποία προσδιορίστηκε στην περιοχή της Φινοκαλιάς (βορειοανατολική Κρήτη, Ελλάδα), ήταν πολύ χαμηλότερη σε σχέση με τις συγκεντρώσεις που έχουν μετρηθεί σε άλλες περιοχές του πλανήτη. Υποστηρίχτηκε ότι η περιοχή της Φινοκαλιάς βρίσκεται μακριά από πηγές εκπομπής PCBs και ότι η παρουσία αυτών των ενώσεων στην ατμόσφαιρα της ανατολικής Μεσογείου θα οφείλεται κυρίως στη μεταφορά από μακρινές αποστάσεις. Η ροή ξηρής εναπόθεσης των PCBs στην περιοχή της Φινοκαλιάς ήταν αρκετά χαμηλότερη σε σχέση με τις αντίστοιχες ροές που έχουν προσδιοριστεί σε άλλα σημεία του πλανήτη. Περαιτέρω, η ροή υγρής εναπόθεσης των PCBs ήταν κατά μέσο όρο τέσσερις φορές υψηλότερη σε σχέση με την αντίστοιχη ροή ξηρής εναπόθεσης. Για πρώτη φορά επιβεβαιώθηκε με μετρήσεις πεδίου, ότι η αντίδραση με τις ρίζες υδροξυλίου θα αποτελεί μια ιδιαίτερα σημαντική διεργασία για την απομάκρυνση των PCBs από την ατμόσφαιρα. Υπολογίστηκε ότι στην ατμόσφαιρα της ανατολικής Μεσογείου θα αιωρούνται περίπου 130 κιλά PCBs. Κάθε χρόνο, περίπου 2 τόνοι PCBs εναποθέτονται συνολικά στα επιφανειακά ύδατα της ανατολικής Μεσογείου, λόγω των διεργασιών της υγρής και ξηρής εναπόθεσης των αερίων και σωματιδιακών PCBs. Εκτιμήθηκε ότι περίπου 4 τόνοι PCBs θα καταστρέφονται κάθε χρόνο στην ατμόσφαιρα της ανατολικής Μεσογείου, κυρίως λόγω της αντίδρασης με τις ρίζες υδροξυλίου. Θεωρώντας ότι το ισοζύγιο μάζας των PCBs είναι σταθερής κατάστασης, εκτιμήθηκε ότι περίπου 6 τόνοι PCBs θα πρέπει να μεταφέρονται κάθε χρόνο προς την ατμόσφαιρα της ανατολικής Μεσογείου λόγω της κίνησης των αερίων μαζών.
