H υπεζωκοτική κοιλότητα εκτίθεται σε μεταβολές της ωσμωτικότητας κατά την ανάπτυξη υπεζωκοτικής συλλογής. Στη παρούσα μελέτη μετρήθηκε το εύρος των τιμών της ωσμωτικότητας υπεζωκοτικών συλλογών προερχόμενων από διάφορες παθολογικές καταστάσεις (κακοήθεις, παραπνευμονικές και διιδρωματικές), με παράλληλη ανάλυση και συσχέτιση των βιοχημικών χαρακτηριστικών τους (γλυκόζη, ολική πρωτεΐνη, LDH, pH). Επίσης μελετήθηκε η επίδραση της μεταβολής της ωσμωτικότητας στην διαπερατότητα του τοιχωματικού υπεζωκότα προβάτου μέσω της μέτρησης της διαμεσοθηλιακής αντίστασης αλλά και η επίδρασή της στην κυτταρική μετανάστευση, προσκόλληση και πολλαπλασιασμό καλοήθων μεσοθηλιακών κυττάρων MeT-5A, και κυττάρων μεσοθηλιώματος Μ14Κ (επιθηλιοειδούς τύπου) και ZL34 (σαρκωματοειδούς τύπου). Το εύρος των υπεζωκοτικών συλλογών που μετρήθηκε (250mOsm – 350mOsm) χρησιμοποιήθηκε για την εφαρμογή του υπερωσμωτικού και υποωσμωτικού στρες αντίστοιχα. Το υποωσμωτικό και όχι το υπερωσμωτικό στρες μείωσε τη διαπερατότητα του τοιχωματικού υπεζωκότα προβάτου. Το υπερωσμωτικό και υποωσμωτικό στρες προκάλεσε μείωση στο ρυθμό μετανάστευσης των MeΤ-5A και ZL34 κυττάρων ενώ δεν επηρέασε τα M14K. Αντίστοιχα η κυτταρική προσκόλληση ενισχύθηκε παρουσία υπερωσμωτικού στρες στα MeΤ-5A και ZL34 κύτταρα ενώ δεν επηρεάστηκε στα M14K. Το υποωσμωτικό στρες προκάλεσε μείωση της κυτταρικής προσκόλλησης μόνο στα ZL34 κύτταρα. Τέλος ο κυτταρικός πολλαπλασιασμός δεν επηρεάστηκε παρουσία υπερωσμωτικού στρες και στις τρεις κυτταρικές σειρές ενώ μειώθηκε παρουσία υποωσμωτικού στρες στα MeΤ-5A και Μ14Κ κύτταρα ενώ δεν μεταβλήθηκε στα ZL34. Συνολικά παρατηρήθηκε ότι το υπεζωκοτικό μεσοθήλιο εκτίθεται σε διάφορες τιμές της ωσμωτικότας και η βαθμίδωση αυτή επηρεάζει τη διαπερατότητα αλλά και της κυτταρικές λειτουργίες τόσο των καλοηθών όσο και των καρκινικών κυττάρων.
