Η ατμοαναμόρφωση του μεθανίου αποτελεί τη κυρίαρχη τεχνολογία για την παραγωγή υδρογόνου. Παρά το γεγονός ότι είναι μια ώριμη διεργασία, παραμένει ιδιαίτερα ενεργοβόρα, περιλαμβάνοντας πολλαπλά στάδια και δυσμενείς συνθήκες λειτουργίας. Κρίνεται λοιπόν αναγκαία η ανάπτυξη νέων τεχνολογιών για παραγωγή υδρογόνου μεγάλης κλίμακας με υψηλές αποδόσεις, χαμηλές ενεργειακές απαιτήσεις και χαμηλό αποτύπωμα άνθρακα. Για την επίτευξη αυτού το στόχου, η εντατικοποίηση των διεργασιών θεωρείται ένας από τους πιο αποτελεσματικούς τρόπους. Στόχος της παρούσας διδακτορικής διατριβής αποτέλεσε η ανάπτυξη μιας καινοτόμου διεργασίας αναμόρφωσης, συνδυάζοντας την in–situ δέσμευση του παραγόμενου CO2 και την τεχνολογία της χημικής ανάδρασης. Η Ροφητικά Ενισχυμένη Ατμοαναμόρφωση του Μεθανίου με Χημική Ανάδραση (SE–CL–SMR) παρέχει μία εναλλακτική διαδρομή για την μετατροπή του μεθανίου απευθείας σε Η2 υψηλής καθαρότητας με μειωμένες θερμικές απαιτήσεις. Προκειμένου να αντιμετωπιστούν σημαντικά εμπόδια για την εξασφάλιση της επίδειξης της προτεινόμενης διεργασίας, διερευνήθηκαν συστηματικά μέσω μιας σειράς ερευνητικών δραστηριοτήτων διάφορες πτυχές της διεργασίας, συμπεριλαμβανομένων θερμοδυναμικών υπολογισμών, ανάπτυξης υλικών και αξιολόγησής τους σε εργαστηριακή κλίμακα. Αρχικά πραγματοποιήθηκε μια συστηματική θερμοδυναμική μελέτη της προτεινόμενης διεργασίας για να προσδιοριστούν τα βέλτιστα όρια των λειτουργικών παραμέτρων. Οι θερμοδυναμικοί υπολογισμοί κατέδειξαν τα πλεονεκτήματα της SE-CL-SMR, επιβεβαιώνοντας ότι η συνδυασμένη διεργασία μπορεί να οδηγήσει σε παραγωγή Η2 υψηλή καθαρότητας με μειωμένες ενεργειακές απαιτήσεις συγκριτικά με τη συμβατική ατμοαναμόρφωση. Οι εκτεταμένες ερευνητικές δραστηριότητες που πραγματοποιήθηκαν για την ανάπτυξη και αξιολόγηση υλικών, οδήγησαν στην επιλογή των βέλτιστων ροφητικών υλικών CO2 βασισμένα στο CaO και υλικών μεταφοράς οξυγόνου που βασίζονται στο NiO για την εφαρμογή τους στη προτεινόμενη διεργασία. Πραγματοποιήθηκε ανάπτυξη ενισχυμένων ροφητικών βασισμένα στο CaO που παρουσιάζουν σημαντική σταθερότητα. Μεταξύ των διαφόρων ενισχυτών που μελετήθηκαν, η Al2O3 και η ZrO2 οδήγησαν στο σχηματισμό ιδιαίτερα σταθερών υλικών ακόμα και μετά από 100 κύκλους. Η βελτιωμένη σταθερότητα των υλικών αυτών αποδόθηκε στην αλληλεπίδραση μέρους του CaO με τα αδρανή οξείδια προς το σχηματισμό των μικτών φάσεων Ca3Al2O6 και CaZrO3. Το πλέον υποσχόμενο ροφητικό, CaO/CaZrO3, δοκιμάστηκε σε κύκλους ρόφησης/εκρόφησης σε μονάδα εργαστηριακής κλίμακας με αντιδραστήρες σταθερής ή ρευστοστερεάς κλίνης, με το υλικό να παρουσιάζει υψηλή μετατροπή ενανθράκωσης υπό όλες τις συνθήκες που ερευνήθηκαν. Όσον αφορά τα υλικά μεταφοράς οξυγόνου βασισμένα στο NiO, τα διάφορα υποστρώματα έδειξαν σημαντική επίδραση, τόσο στη αναγωγή του NiO όσο και στην εκλεκτικότητα προς παραγωγή Η2. Η μελέτη των υλικών στη συμβατική ατμοαναμόρφωση έδειξε ότι το ανηγμένο NiO υποστηριγμένο σε ZrO2, CeO2/ZrO2/La2O3, CeO2/ZrO2, Al2O3, NiAl2O4 ή MgAl2O4 εμφανίζει ικανοποιητική δραστικότητα στους 650°C. Τα πλέον υποσχόμενα υλικά δοκιμάσθηκαν περαιτέρω σε συνθήκες ατμοαναμόρφωσης μεθανίου με χημική ανάδραση για 20 συνεχόμενες κύκλους οξειδοαναγωγής. Μεταξύ των εξεταζόμενων υλικών, το NiO/ZrO2 επέδειξε καλή δραστηριότητα με υψηλή αρχική μετατροπή CH4 (>80%) και ελάχιστη απενεργοποίηση μετά από 20 κύκλους οξειδοαναγωγής.Τα υλικά αξιολογήθηκαν κάτω από τις βέλτιστες συνθήκες της προτεινόμενης διεργασίας, παρέχοντας πειραματικά την επίδειξη της SE-CL-SMR. Περαιτέρω, διεξήχθη εκτενής παραμετρική ανάλυση για να εξασφαλιστεί ότι είναι εφικτή η παραγωγή υδρογόνου υψηλής καθαρότητας (έως και 99%) με μειωμένες ενεργειακές απαιτήσεις. Η λειτουργία της διεργασίας αποδείχθηκε περαιτέρω με κυκλικά πειράματα. Τα υλικά επέδειξαν εξαιρετική σταθερότητα χωρίς υποβάθμιση της απόδοσης τους για 30 κύκλους, που αντιστοιχούν σε περισσότερο από 30 ώρες σε συνθήκες αντίδρασης. Τα αποτελέσματα που προέκυψαν από αυτή την παρούσα διατριβή αναμένεται να προωθήσουν σημαντικά την πρόοδο προς την μελλοντική εφαρμογή της προτεινόμενης διεργασίας.
