Gothic architecture is one of the oldest surviving architecture in Slovakia. The Church of St Catherine of Alexandria in Handlová was built in the High Gothic period of 1360 - 1370; its main stone portal belongs to the later phase of 1502. The paper focuses on architectural features and geometry of this late gothic portal. The portal has a geometrical construction clearly based on the square of 2670 × 2670 mm. The division into thirds is applied in the details of the intersecting stone mouldings. Conclusions of the geometrical analysis suggest that the ratio of width to height of the entire portal could be close to 2 : 3 or 5 : 8 to suggest some consideration, but it was not a primary goal to attain precise ratios. The stone cutter just followed many times repeated geometrical procedure - square and the pointed arch, based on it.
Entasis, upward curvature, columnar inclination and several other manipulations or deviations from the strict geometrical rules were known in Ancient Greece and Rome and some of them - entasis could be taken as example - were used up to the beginning of the 20th century in eclectic and historicizing architecture. The article mentions historical texts about entasis from Vitruvius up to Renaissance works. Mainly Vignola’s description of proper and elegant way of how to construct columnar entasis curve of the Tuscan and Doric order columns is discussed in detail and expressed mathematically.
Gothic architecture is one of the oldest surviving architecture in Slovakia. The Church of Pauline Order in Trebišov has many building phases; its entrance stone portal belongs to the later phase dated about the second half of the 15th century. Paper focuses on an architectural features and geometry of this portal. Portal has clearly a geometrical construction that is compared to another late gothic portal from church in Handlová. Conclusion suggests, that ratio of the entire portal dimensions is close to 4 : 3, proportions of jamb and opening widths are 1 : 4 : 1 part of the overall portal width and there highly probably existed some simple method of determining position of pointed arch arches.
Last terrorist attacks have shown, that among so called soft targets of attackers are included places with the concentrated mass of innocent people. Among such a places belong theatres, concert halls etc., having a seat in historical buildings. Historical heritage is important part of every nation self-conscience, pride and memory. Many historical buildings, preserved as cultural monuments create genius loci of urban environment and at the same time they serve as a public buildings in compliance to the most of the safety measures demanded in Slovak legislation. Some exceptions could be legally made and should be made to retain their authentic historical values, protected by international documents on monument preservation. A case study of historical Slovak National Theatre building is analyzed in the paper.
Oval, circular and elliptic forms appear in the architecture from the very beginning. The basic problem of the geometric analysis of the spaces with an elliptic or oval ground plan is a great sensitivity of the outcome calculations to the plan's precision, mainly to distinguish between oval and ellipse. Sebastiano Serlio and Guarino Guarini belong to those architects, theoreticians, who analysed the potential of circular or oval forms and some of their ideas are analysed in the paper. Elliptical or oval plans were used also in Slovak baroque architecture or interior elements and the paper introduce some of the most known examples as a connection to the world architecture ideas.
