Purpose The study aims to explore motivators and barriers in business venture creation among potential Latina entrepreneurs. Design/methodology/approach Focus group interviews collected data using Latinas between the ages of 20-30 who expressed interest in starting their own businesses in the near future. Interview participants were primarily first-generation college students. Findings Findings revealed major themes based around four dimensions of cultural heritage, motivators, barriers and preferred resources. Cultural heritage and gender are both enablers and obstacles for Latinas. Frequently mentioned motivators were parental business ownership, autonomy, flexible income and self-fulfillment. The barriers include fear, lack of financial management knowledge, business location selection and discrimination. The preferred resources were informal education, a checklist, a toolkit, free online resources and networking with business owners and mentors. Research limitations/implications The findings of this study highlight pull factors (i.e. family business background and self-fulfillment) increasing entrepreneurial motivations among Latinas. The present study illustrates the nuanced but substantive interactions of gender and ethnicity in Latinas’ perceptions and attitudes toward new business formation. Originality/value The present study contributes to the literature by exploring the motivators and barriers that affect business formation among emerging Latina entrepreneurs. Moreover, past research has not explored both motivators and barriers perceived by nascent Latina entrepreneurs. Findings from this study will assist future researchers in developing materials and programs to aid female and ethnic entrepreneurship.

This population of older persons was generally not well prepared for emergencies, and this lack of preparedness was widespread across social, demographic, and economic groups in the United States. Findings with implications for policy and outreach include the importance of health care providers discussing preparedness and the use of experienced peers for outreach. Objective The purpose of this study was to assess the self-reported level of individual emergency preparedness, the dependent variable, of people who attended a community health-related fair. The study's independent variables included demographic characteristics, perceptions of preparedness, previous disaster experience, and the presence of a medical condition and were used to examine the variability in self-reported emergency preparedness levels. Methods Data came from attendees at two community health-related fairs. Multivariate analysis on 188 participants was performed. A model predicting preparedness levels with demographic variables was constructed; successive models were built adding perceptions of preparedness, personal experiences with disasters, and presence of a medical condition. Results Preparedness levels varied little across sociodemographic dimensions explaining virtually no variance in overall preparedness. Subsequent models adding perceptions of preparedness and personal experiences significantly increased the explained variance to 40%. Of participants who reported a medical condition, the model including discussions about emergency preparedness with health-care providers explained 67% of the variance in overall preparedness levels. Conclusion The strong, positive relationship between the health-care provider and preparedness levels indicates a pathway for effecting change in preparedness levels and ultimately community health after an emergency. The inclusion of such education at community events should be considered. Research agendas should include providing evidence for the contents of disaster supply kits.

This research examines differences between those Mexican migrants choosing metropolitan destinations and those choosing destinations outside metropolitan areas of the United States. Using general estimating equations, the study presents data indicating that since the 1960s migrants choosing rural destinations are less fluent in English, slightly older, much less educated, far more likely to be unskilled, more likely to be married, and more likely to be undocumented. The picture is more complex when consideration is restricted to those migrants arriving in rural areas since the passage of the North American Free Trade Agreement. These migrants are far more likely to be single, have more education but have less English fluency, have less work experience, and have less family experience with migration to the United States. They are more likely to come from small towns and rural areas of Mexico.

The delineation of spatial boundaries for human dimension of natural resource research has long been a source of challenge. Inherent in the use of aggregated data are theoretical and practical dilemmas, the most salient being establishing measurement boundaries that match conceptual boundaries. An alternative way to conceptualize population is to view the data as a continuous phenomenon over the landscape. This article presents a conceptual framework and method that uses geospatial data with Census data to determine human settlement patterns by generating a population density surface (PDS). The PDS provides a base for further analyses and user-de ned, theory-driven population aggregations while preserving more spatial differentiation than traditional zone-based models. The rst section is a brief overview of the inherent dif culties of aggregated data. The second outlines an approach for creating a population density surface. The last section presents results and an experimental test, discusses the advantages and disadvantages of a surface, and outlines directions for the further research.
