Dyslipidaemia accounts for 55% of population-attributable risk for cardiovascular disease (CVD). Lipid levels should be measured as part of a comprehensive CVD risk assessment. Calculation of 10-year CVD risk should be performed, except for patients with pre-existing CVD, diabetes or a familial hyperlipidaemia, who are considered high-risk by definition. Initial therapy is with a statin in almost all cases. Other therapies are used for statin intolerance or where a residual dyslipidaemia persists after statin therapy.
